β-Phenylethylamine content in marine algae around Turkish coasts

Abstract: β-Phenylethylamine content was investigated in two green, five brown, and ten red marine algae by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. β-Phenylethylamine was found in six red algae but was not detected in the brown and green algae studied. The highest amount of β-phenylethylamine was determined in Gelidium crinale (30.42 μg g-1). This is the first report of β-phenylethylamine in the algae tested and also the first to quantify β-phenylethylamine in marine algae.

“…Although PEA is quite rare in plant kingdom, there are some reports on its presence in algae (Rolle et al 1977;Percot et al 2009) and plants (Smith 1977;Shabana et al 2006). PEA has been mainly studied as a metabolite of neurotransmitters in animals and in the human brain (Blau 1978;Saavedra 1978).…”

“…Recently the presence of PEA was examined in 17 marine algae and it was found only in six red algae [14]: Gelidium crinale , Gracilaria bursa-pastoris , Halymenia floresii , Phyllophora crispa , Polysiphonia morrowii , Polysiphonia tripinnata. PEA was also found in the microalgae Scenedesmus acutus [15].…”
