β‐mangostin suppresses human hepatocellular carcinoma cell invasion through inhibition of MMP‐2 and MMP‐9 expression and activating the ERK and JNK pathways

Abstract: β-mangostin is a dietary xanthone that has been reported to have the anticancer properties in some human cancer cell types. However, the antimetastatic effect and molecular mechanism of β-mangostin action in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells remain unknown. In this study, we found that β-mangostin did not induce cytotoxicity in human HCC cells (SK-Hep-1, Huh-7 and HA22T/VGH cells). β-mangostin could inhibit migration and invasion of human HCC cells. Meanwhile, β-mangostin significantly decreased the p… Show more

“…Inhibition of MMP‐2/‐9 by siRNA suppresses migration in retinoblastoma cells 35 . β‐mangostin downregulates MMP‐2/‐9 protein expression and this way inhibits liver cancer cell invasion 41 . Similarly, we found that POMx suppresses the MMP‐2/‐9 activities and expressions based on zymography and western blotting in oral cancer HSC‐3 and Ca9‐22 cells (Figure 5).…”

“…MMP2 is among the most well characterized MMPs, and this factor plays essential roles in degrading ECM components. Depending on activation by the PI3K signalling pathway or the ERK and JNK pathways, it has been shown to have critical functions in the progression, invasion, and metastasis of HCC[ 36 , 37 ].…”

“…The molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of cancer progress have been explored with the goal of identifying the complete network of signalling pathways and developing effective approaches against cancers. MAPKs include three major subfamilies, namely ERKs, JNKs, and p38 MAPK, that contribute to the control of cancer development and progression [30][31][32][33]. Huaier Granule extract suppresses proliferation and metastasis in lung cancer cells by downregulating the MTDH, JAK2/STAT3, and MAPK signalling pathways [34].…”
