β-blockers after acute myocardial infarction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A nationwide population-based observational study

Abstract: Background Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) less often receive β-blockers after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). This may influence their outcomes after AMI. This study evaluated the efficacy of β-blockers after AMI in patients with COPD, compared with non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers (NDCCBs) and absence of these two kinds of treatment. “…Furthermore, differences in study design, including adjustment for immortal time bias, may very well explain differing results, as immortal time bias often leads to intervention risk reduction in pharmacoepidemiologic studies. 22 Of note, mortality reduction has been reported in an observational study by Su et al, 28 despite correction for immortal time bias, in COPD patients hospitalized with a diagnosis of AMI.…”
