An approximately 6‐year‐old, obese, deep‐chested dog presented to a sterilisation clinic for a routine ovariohysterectomy surgery. Significant intraoperative haemorrhage was observed from one of the ligated ovarian arteries. Exploratory surgery was performed to locate the bleeding tissue and additional ligatures were placed. This took several minutes due to impairment of visualisation from blood and tissues. After re‐ligation of the bleeding tissue, haemorrhage ceased and the patient recovered uneventfully. A long suture tag was left on ovarian pedicle ligatures in subsequent canine ovariohysterectomy surgeries to help locate bleeding pedicles more quickly. This case report describes the use of long suture tags left on the ovarian pedicle during ovariohysterectomy, with details on the properties of the suture used, that allows for this technique to be safe and effective in expediting identification of the pedicle in case of haemorrhage.

The effect of extracellular calcium ion (Ca2+) depletion, diltiazem, D-600 and TMB-8 on potassium (K+), norepinephrine-(NE) and histamine-induced contractions of the rabbit isolated ovarian artery was studied. K+-induced contractions, which were biphasic, were rapidly lost (congruent to 5 min) when calcium was removed from the physiological saline solution (O-Ca2+ PSS). NE and histamine-induced contractions also declined rapidly under nominal O-Ca2+ conditions without any evidence of a depletion resistant component. However, after 1 h under these conditions there was a partial restoration of their responses. EGTA (10(-3) mol/l) abolished these contractions to NE and histamine but not those in normal PSS. Diltiazem and D-600 were more effective against K+-induced than NE- and histamine-induced contractions while the intracellular Ca2+ antagonist TMB-8 was equally effective against all three responses. Histamine could still evoke contraction of the K+-contracted ovarian artery after this had been completely abolished with diltiazem or D-600 but not TMB-8. These results are interpreted to suggest that K+, NE and histamine probably release intracellular Ca2+ to evoke contractions of the ovarian artery. They differ, however, in the mechanisms they employ to facilitate entry of extracellular calcium, which in turn leads to intracellular calcium release.

Objective: To study reactivity of the ovarian vascular bed to noradrenaline and carbachol during an experimentally induced ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) in rabbits. Materials and Methods: Rabbits were treated with human menopausal gonadotropin (75 IU) daily for 6 days, followed by human chorionic gonadotropin (2,500 IU) to induce OHSS. The ovarian vascular bed was isolated and perfused with physiological solution and its reactivity to injected noradrenaline and acetylcholine was examined. Results: The mean weight of the hyperstimulated ovary was 2.85 ± 0.5 g compared to 0.25 ± 0.1 g for the control rabbits. There was no significant difference in (a) the basal perfusion pressure of the ovarian vascular bed ex vivo; (b) the potency of, or maximum response to, noradrenaline, and (c) agonist dissociation constant or receptor density. Carbachol induced significantly greater vasodilation in ovarian vascular beds from hormone-treated rabbits, indicating a greater role for nitric oxide in this syndrome, as further supported by the observation that NW-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride (L-NAME) was more effective against carbachol-induced response in hormone-treated rabbits. Conclusion: In the rabbit model of OHSS, carbachol produced an increased ex vivo vascular response but noradrenaline did not.
