α-Pyrone Polyketides from Streptomyces ambofaciens BI0048, an Endophytic Actinobacterial Strain Isolated from the Red Alga Laurencia glandulifera

Abstract: Four new (1-4) and six previously reported (5-10) α-pyrone polyketides, along with benzoic acid, hydrocinnamic acid, and (E)-cinnamic acid, were isolated from the organic extract resulting from the cultivation of the algicolous strain Streptomyces ambofaciens BI0048, which in turn was isolated from the inner tissues of the red alga Laurencia glandulifera. The structure elucidation of the isolated natural products was based on extensive analysis of their spectroscopic data (NMR, MS, UV, IR). Compounds 1-10 were… Show more

“…Mar. Drugs 2021, 19, x FOR PEER REVIEW 45 of 58 separated from Streptomyces ambofaciens BI0048 associated with red alga Laurencia glandulifera [177]. Geosmin (S195), the compound responsible for the "earth smell" and betapatchoulene (S196) used as a fragrance agent in the perfume industry, were two major metabolites of Streptomyces carnosus M-40 [168].…”

“…In addition to medicine, Greek strains have potential applications in the field of agriculture as biocontrol agents and growth promoters [9][10][11]. Each of these streptomycetes produces multiple secondary metabolites; for example, Streptomyces ambofaciens BI0048, an endophyte isolated from the red alga Laurencia glandulifera from Attiki, produced 10 different α-pyrone polyketides as well as benzoic acid, hydrocinnamic acid and (E)-cinnamic acid [12]. Other examples include Streptomyces sp.…”

“…α-Pyrones are one of polyketide-biosynthetic skeletons, characterized by six-membered unsaturated cyclic scaffold containing a lactone [7]. α-Pyrones can be widely found in the fungi and actinomycetes [8,9,10], and these molecules demonstrated a wide range of extraordinary biological activities, such as antimicrobial [11], anti-inflammatory [12], cytotoxic [13], and quorum sensing signaling molecules [14,15].…”
