Wound Healing Activity of the Essential Oil of Bursera morelensis, in Mice

Bursera morelensis is used in Mexican folk medicine to treat wounds on the skin. It is an endemic tree known as “aceitillo”, and the antibacterial and antifungal activity of its essential oil has been verified; it also acts as an anti-inflammatory. All of these reported biological activities make the essential oil of B. morelensis a candidate to accelerate the wound-healing process. The objective was to determine the wound-healing properties of B. morelensis’ essential oil on a murine model. The essential oil was obtained by hydro-distillation, and the chemical analysis was performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In the murine model, wound-healing efficacy (WHE) and wound contraction (WC) were evaluated. Cytotoxic activity was evaluated in vitro using peritoneal macrophages from BALB/c mice. The results showed that 18 terpenoid-type compounds were identified in the essential oil. The essential oil had remarkable WHE regardless of the dose and accelerated WC and was not cytotoxic. In vitro tests with fibroblasts showed that cell viability was dose-dependent; by adding 1 mg/mL of essential oil (EO) to the culture medium, cell viability decreased below 80%, while, at doses of 0.1 and 0.01 mg/mL, it remained around 90%; thus, EO did not intervene in fibroblast proliferation, but it did influence fibroblast migration when wound-like was done in monolayer cultures. The results of this study demonstrated that the essential oil was a pro-wound-healing agent because it had good healing effectiveness with scars with good tensile strength and accelerated repair. The probable mechanism of action of the EO of B. morelensis, during the healing process, is the promotion of the migration of fibroblasts to the site of the wound, making them active in the production of collagen and promoting the remodeling of this collagen.

Medicinal herbs are one of the imperative sources of drugs all over the world. Star anise (Illicium verum), an evergreen, medium-sized tree with star-shaped fruit, is an important herb with wide distribution throughout southwestern parts of the Asian continent. Besides its use as spice in culinary, star anise is one of the vital ingredients of the Chinese medicinal herbs and is widely known for its antiviral effects. It is also the source of the precursor molecule, shikimic acid, which is used in the manufacture of oseltamivir (Tamiflu ® ), an antiviral medication for influenza A and influenza B. Besides, several other molecules with numerous biological benefits including the antiviral effects have been reported from the same plant. Except the antiviral potential, star anise possesses a number of other potentials such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, antifungal, anthelmintic, insecticidal, secretolytic, antinociceptive, antiinflammatory, gastroprotective, sedative properties, expectorant and spasmolytic, and estrogenic effects. In recent decades, there has been a significant increase in interest in natural therapies. In this way, plants with therapeutic properties constitute an important source of biologically active compounds. The species Protium spruceanum (Benth.) Engl., popularly known as Almescla is widely used in folk medicine, with a wide geographical distribution, often found in gallery forests and palm swamps (veredas), thus easily accessible. The objective of this work was to evaluate the oil yield of the leaves and stem, as well as the chemical composition of Almescla resin collected in a palm swamp in the north-central region of Minas Gerais. After drying, the botanical samples were triturated until a fine powder was obtained and the particle size of the leaf sample standardized through sieves. The test was carried out in triplicate, the oil being obtained from the hot extraction method in Soxhlet with solvent Hexane P.A. The resin was subjected to chromatographic analysis and infrared spectroscopy, by the preparation of KBr pellets (1% m/m). For the leaf sample, an average yield of 3.33% was obtained and for the stem, an average yield of 1.40%. The resin had the major chemical compound α-phellandrene (58.18-71.25%). It is concluded that, Almescla has a great oil yield, and the chemical analysis showed that the species has a great medicinal potential to be exploited.
