The synthesis of optically pure (R)-(+)-4-isopropylpiperidin-2-one, (R)-(+)-4-isopropyl-4-methylpiperidin-2-one, and (R)-(+)-5-methyIpiperidin-2-one in high yields from monocyclic terpene percursors are described. The CD spectra of these compounds are reported, and the chiroptical properties of -lactams are examined in terms of current theories for the amide chromophore. It is concluded that slight, conformationally induced nonplanarity of the amide chromophore is responsible for the signs of the longest wavelength bands in the CD spectra of these and related compounds.

Die Verwertung des Magnesiums zur R e d u k t i o n v o n o r g a n i s c h e n V e r b i n d u n g e n beschrankt sich derzeit im wesentlichen auf die Anwendung des Metalls als Amalgam, als magnesium-organische Verbindung oder in aktivierter Form, z. B. in Gegenwart von Jodl). Wir bemiihten uns, zur Ausbildung von weiteren Methoden auf diesem Gebiete beizutragen, mit Riicksicht auf die bequeme Handhabung und auf das niedrige Aquivalent-Gewicht des Magnesiums, das aul3erdeni ein schwerlosliches Hydroxyd bildet und somit auch fur alkali-empfindliche Substanzen in Frage konimt.Es zeigte sich, daB zwei Arbeitsweisen allgemeinere Anwendbarkeit versprechen, namlich : W a s s e r s t o f f -E n t w i c k l u n g a u s was s e ra r m e m M e t h y l a l k o h o l m i t Magnesium2)woriiber spater berichtet werden sollund ferner Abfangen des a u s Chlorammonium-Losung d u r c h d a s M e t a l l i n F r e i h e i t g e s e t z t e n W a~s e r s t o f f s~) zur Verwertung desselben fur Reduktions-Zwecke. D i e L o s l i c h k e i t v o n Magnesium i n waBrigem S a l m i a k ist schon W o h l e r bekannt gewesen4). Nach H. Mouraour5) kann das Salz durch eine Reihe anderer Verbindungen ersetzt werden. Die ausfiihrliche Untersuchung solcher Umwandlungen oder ein Referat iiber die einschlagige Literatur liegt jedoch nicht in dem Rahmen dieser Arbeit. Es sei dariiber nur Folgendes vermerkt : Magnesium wird durch Wasser und Salmiak schon in der Kalte, unter Warmeabgabe gelost. Die Fliissigkeit bleibt zunachst klar, scheidet aber spater, nachdem mehr Metall in Losung gegangen, M a g n e s i u m h y d r o x y d ab.
