“…Pickett (1975) pointed out that part of the complexity of the terpene pattern of higher plants may often be due to secondary chemical reactions during the isolation procedure. Steam distillation is suspected to generate t~-terpinene, •-terpinene and oxygenated terpenes like terpinene-4-ol, terpinolene, linalool and borneol Pauly et al 1973;Lorbeer et al 1984). The quantities of these terpenes did not markedly increase in this study, compared with solvent extraction, possibly due to the adjustment of the pH to neutrality.…”

“…Jiittner (1986) and Lorbeer et al (1984) used closed loop stripping to overcome analytical problems with components enclosed in the solvent extract that might disturb gas-chromatographical analysis. Compared with our results, Lorbeer et al (1984) found A-3-carene instead of sabinene, as well as enhanced proportions of [3-pinene and terpinene-4-ol and a reduced proportion of myrcene. The terpene pattern described by Jiittner (1986) resembles that of the pentane extract, but the absolute quantities of terpenes extracted seem to be lower.…”
