An experimental investigation of the bolt pull-through stiffness and strength of pultruded glass-fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) plate is described. Details of an adjustable bolt pull-through test rig are presented. The rig was used to carry out 80 low and ultimate load tests on single bolts loaded in tension at the centres of square pultruded GFRP plates. In the tests, one plate thickness, two bolt diameters, four plate side lengths, two sets of plate edge conditions and two orientations of the principal orthotropic axes with respect to one of the edge conditions were investigated. Transverse stiffnesses as well as damage and ultimate tensile loads of the bolt-plate specimens were quantified from the test data. The latter are presented graphically to illustrate the effects of bolt diameter, plate slenderness, plate edge conditions, etc. on stiffnesses and damage/ultimate loads. The use of lightweight and corrosion-resistant construction materials such as pultruded glass-fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) profiles in bridges has been increasing in recent years. Even though the use of detachable connections with mechanical fasteners is the most reliable and controlled technique for joining GFRP structures, there is a lack of information on the load-bearing capacity of connections in which the bolts are subjected to tension loads.The results from a series of tests aimed at investigating the load-bearing behaviour of different GFRP connection types where bending or pull-out failure may occur are summarised in this paper. The tests were conducted using standard stainless steel bolts and nuts. Load resistance models are proposed based on the experimental investigations. Furthermore, a partial safety factor is determined using the statistical methods given in EN 1990. Finally, an application of mechanically fastened connections is shown for a GFRP pedestrian bridge erected near Schwerin, Germany.

Herrn Univ.‐Prof. Dr.‐Ing. Rolf Kindmann zur Vollendung seines 70. Lebensjahres gewidmet Die Verwendung von pultrudierten glasfaserverstärkten Kunststoffprofilen als Primärstruktur findet eine immer weitere Verbreitung im Bauwesen. Momentan werden Stahlbauschrauben mit einem Durchmesser größer 10 mm für die Verbindung von vorgefertigten Bauteilen auf der Baustelle verwendet. Dieser Beitrag berichtet über Untersuchungen zu möglichen Alternativen zu diesem aus dem Stahlbau stammenden Verbindungsmittel. In umfangreichen Versuchen werden die Eigenschaften von Scher‐Lochleibungs‐Verbindungen mit gewindefurchenden Schrauben, Mehrbereichsblindnieten, hochfesten Strukturnieten, Selbstbohrschrauben sowie Schließringbolzen im Hinblick auf die Anwendbarkeit für die Verbindung von pultrudierten glasfaserverstärkten Kunststoffprofilen untersucht und bewertet.
