Most wireless sensor network (WSN) proposals are unrelated to multimedia and other smart home infrastructures. This paper combines these issues and presents a solution where the Kilavi sensor network platform can be used as middleware to provide information for ZUMA. Kilavi is a centralized protocol designed for communication between high capacity management point and low capacity sensor nodes in building environment. ZUMA is a centralized future smart-home platform that interconnects all kinds devices in the home environment. This paper mainly focuses on sensor network operation issues. The discussion is on the benefits that the centralized architecture can provide in typical sensor network operations that are node discovery, routing and data dissemination, power control, and security. To support the discussion, the paper gives numbers that illustrate the benefits that centralization has over typical decentralized WSN solutions in home environment.

Although electronic devices permeate the home and offer unsurpassed power and features, many impediments still exist to realizing the concept of the smart-home: configuration complexity, minimal device interoperability, difficulty of use, lack of personalization, and no integration with sensors for awareness and adaptation. We define four tenets of smart-home environment: Zero-configuration, Universality, Multiuser optimality, and Adaptability (ZUMA), and describe a platform based on a set of clean abstractions for users, content, and devices. The platform enables configuration and organization of content and networked heterogeneous devices in a smart-home environment. Architectures for smart homes address nearly all requirements for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL). The present paper discusses the missing requirements to support daily life situations of elderly people. Therefore, we introduce metrics to evaluate smart home architectures for AAL. Furthermore, we will elaborate extensions to Persona, the most advanced architecture approach of our investigation. The goal of this research is to present an architecture that meets all requirements including those which were identified as missing or have not been taken into account completely. In addition to that, the authors looked at the scalability of state-of-the-art smart home architectures to provide an architectural design that fits the needs of the mass market as well as large scale implementations.
