ZPUC: A New Configuration of Single DC Source for Modular Multilevel Converter Applications

Abstract: Z packed U-cell (ZPUC) converter topology is presented in this paper as a new type of multilevel converter topology that can be operated in a single phase as well as in three-phase configurations while using a single DC source. Since each U-cell includes two switches and one capacitor, in this topology, three U-cells are needed to generate 5 or 7 voltage levels. Moreover, the configuration proposed for the ZPUC is more appropriate for high-power application modular multilevel converters (MMCs) to increase the … Show more

“…A 49-level PUC is reported in [151,152] by cascading two asymmetrical seven-level PUC units demonstrates the asymmetric ability of PUC. A ZPUC converter is reported in [153] to operate PUC with a single dc-link for both single-phase and three-phase systems. To achieve this, ZPUC involves an additional FC module in conventional PUC, however the operation and number of levels vary with the available redundancies.…”

“…If the capacitor voltage is regulated at the reference value V2 * =Vdc/2, and taking advantage of the switching redundancy, an optimized output performance could be achieved by the generation of 5 equidistant voltage levels (PUC5) at the output terminals (FIGURE 7) resulting in a better flexibility in voltage levels generation (TABLE 3) and easier balancing of the capacitor voltage compared to the PUC7 configuration [39]- [45]. By adding a capacitor to the PUC5 inverter, a new topology called ZPUC5 was proposed in [46], where the output voltage waveform is unipolar.…”

“…A new breed of multilevel inverters, known as the packed U-Cell, is able to overcome the limitations previously mentioned. These inverters can generate a high number of voltage levels while using a smaller number of active switches and passive components [15]- [18]. In fact, some specific applications of the PUC converters have shown the ability to generate 7, 9 and even 15 voltage levels with a single DC source, isolated or generated by photovoltaic arrays [19]- [21].…”
