Zooplankton abundance, species composition and ecology of tropical high-mountain crater lake Wonchi, Ethiopia

Abstract: The highlands of Ethiopia represent some of the remnants of undisturbed aquatic ecosystems; they are however highly threatened by significant socio-economic developments and associated anthropogenic impacts. Lake Wonchi is one of the few remaining fairly pristine high-mountain crater lakes in the central highlands and has never been investigated in detail. We present a first study on zooplankton taxa composition, abundance and biomass conducted over more than one year including the underlying environmental dri… Show more

“…According to the analysis of literature data and the obtained results, some planktonic invertebrates which are characteristic of small water bodies can be distinguished. Rotifers Asplanchna priodonta, Keratella cochlearis, K. quadrata, Filinia longiseta, F. terminalis, Daphnia (Daphnia) longispina [75][76][77], copepods of the genus Eudiaptomus and Acantodiaptomus [33] noted in our study were typical species of zooplankton in mountain cold-water lakes. Some plankton invertebrates are typical of plain shallow water bodies.…”

“…In summer 2019, 58 taxa were identified in zooplankton of South-East Kazakhstan small lakes. The low species richness is characteristic for zooplankton in small lakes of different regions [35][36][37]73,74], including mountain lakes [75][76][77].…”

“…Detailed investigations of the specificity of high mountain lakes is undertaken by various scientific disciplines (Choiński et al 2015). The research concerns both the biological (Korbee et al 2012;Kosolapova 2012;Degefu and Shagerl 2015) as well as physical-chemical and physical and chemical aspects (Tanaka and Tominaga 1994;Rodríguez-Rodríguez et al 2004;Santolaria et al 2015).…”

“…When light penetration is low within the water column, dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations and water temperatures tend to be lower in the bottom water layers, making these habitats unsuitable for fish foraging activity but effective refuge areas for Daphnia spp. to avoid fish predation [16][17][18][19][20][21]. This Daphnia behavioral response is a survival strategy that was acquired as a result of coexistence with predators over extended periods.…”
