Zoogeographical distribution of Southeast Asian freshwater Calanoida

Abstract: distribution of these organisms in the region. This paper reviews the systematic status and geographical distribution of 30 odd species of freshwater calanoid copepods in Southeast Asia. Three regions are delineated based on the diversity and abundance of these organisms; Region I being the Southasiatic element, Region II the attenuated belt of copepods and Region III rich in endemic species. The implication of a northsouth diminishing of copepod species to inland fisheries is postulated.

“…Investigations of freshwater diaptomid copepods (Calanoida) in Thailand have been documented since 1980 (Lai & Fernando, 1980, 1981Sanoamuang, 1999), but records of Eodiaptomus species were reported only recently. First, described E. sanoamuangae from a roadside canal in Khon Kaen, a species previously misidentified as E. sinensis (Burckhardt, 1913) from the River Yangtsekiang, China by Mashiko (1951) and Shen & Song (1979).…”
