A review of systematics, distribution and ecology of tropical freshwater zooplankton

Abstract: Studies on tropical freshwater zooplankton which commenced in the mid-19th century have been intensified during the past twenty years or so . The whole region, barring a few areas, has been investigated, including very recently tropical Australia . The widely scattered literature is briefly summarized with comments . Some general distributional patterns are emerging . There is a dearth of ecological studies especially on seasonality and production . Systematics lags behind the North Temperate zone in most trop… Show more

“…The greatest occurrence of species of the genus Lecane in tropical regions was also mentioned by Koste & Shiel (1983), Bozelli (1992), Bonecker et al (1994), Dussart et al (1984), Dabés (1995), Koste (1999), Sharma & Sharma (2001). This genus and Brachiouns were best represented in Southeast Asia (Segers, 2001).…”

“…Freshwater zooplankton communities have been described in tropical and sub-tropical areas in numerous studies in South America (Matsumura-Tundisi & Tundisi, 1976;Bini et al, 1997;Starling, 2000;Fernando, 2002;Bonecker et al, 2007;Lansac-Tôha et al, 2008;Sousa et al, 2014), Africa (Uku & Mavuti, 1994;Mageed & Heikal, 2006;Fetahi et al, 2011) and Asia (Dussart et al, 1984). They are, in lentic zones, generally driven by environmental factors such as turbidity, nutrient and dissolved oxygen concentrations or phytoplankton density and diversity (Hart, 1990;Schulz & Sterner, 1999).…”

“…Dussart et al (1984) indicated that Rotifera, Cladocera and Copepods are composed of few species and that the Cyclopoida Copepod could represent high densities. They also specified that the common limnetic species can use the entire range of habitat types.…”

“…Furthermore, besides latitude (i.e. 23°N-23°S), altitude should be taken into account when considering tropical climates (Dussart et al 1984). Although these factors are acknowledged, it is neither feasible nor practical to discuss all possible freshwater ecosystems on a micro-scale.…”
