Salicylaldimine-modified mesoporous silica (Sal-MCM-3 and Sal-MCM-9) was prepared through a co-condensation method with different amounts of added salicylaldimine. With the coordination from the salicylaldimine, zinc ions were impregnated on Sal-MCM-3 and Sal-MCM-9. Then, Zn-Sal-MCM-3 and Zn-Sal-MCM-9 were calcined to obtain nano-zinc oxide loaded on mesoporous silica (ZnO-MCM-3 and ZnO-MCM-9). The material structures were systematically studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N2 adsorption/desorption measurements, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), zeta potential, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet diffused reflectance spectrum (UV-vis DRS), and thermogravimetry (TGA). Methyl orange (MO) was used to investigate the photocatalysis behavior of ZnO-MCM-3 and ZnO-MCM-9. The results confirmed that nano ZnO was loaded in the channels as well as the outside surface of mesoporous silica (MCM-41). The modification of salicylaldimine helped MCM-41 to load more nano ZnO on MCM-41. When the modification amount of salicylaldimine was one-ninth and one-third of the mass of the silicon source, respectively, the load of nano ZnO on ZnO-MCM-9 and ZnO-MCM-3 had atomic concentrations of 1.27 and 2.03, respectively. ZnO loaded on ZnO-MCM-9 had a wurtzite structure, while ZnO loaded on ZnO-MCM-3 was not in the same crystalline group. The blocking effect caused by nano ZnO in the channels reduced the orderliness of MCM-41. The photodegradation of MO can be divided in two processes, which are mainly controlled by the surface areas of ZnO-MCM and the loading amount of nano ZnO, respectively. The pseudo-first-order model was more suitable for the photodegradation process.

In this study, the mesoporous ZnO/AlSBA-15 (Si/Al=7) nanocomposite catalyst was prepared by using a combination of direct and impregnation procedure. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope coupled with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and Temperature programmed reduction (TPR-H2). The XRD and N2 sorption results show the hexagonal mesoporous nature of catalyst with type IV adsorption isotherm. The surface area was calculated by the BET method and found to be 373 m2/g. From the TPR-H2 study, the reducibility temperature of ZnO found to be 966 K. Further, the Biginelli reaction is a promising multi-component reaction in organic synthetic chemistry as it approaches the green chemistry protocols and adducts are extensively used as drugs, intermediate and in medicine. Hence, the catalytic activity was tested in one pot Biginelii reaction for the synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-one's derivative. The product yield was observed to be 96% at temperature 333 K, at the short response time of 4 h. The two adducts were examined by 1HNMR, 13CNMR, and FT-IR spectroscopy. Besides, the biological activity of adduct (A) C15H18N2O5 was explored by gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative microorganisms (E. coli). The adduct (A) C15H18N2O5 shows a clear inhibition zone of 24 mm against E. Coli whereas Azithromycin shows an inhibition zone of 28 mm. Copyright © 2019 BCREC Group. All rights reserved

In the chemistry world, the year 1891 was considered as milestone year for the discovery of new type of heterocyclic compounds by Pietro Biginelli. The Biginelli protocol provides 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones/thiones in the presence of Bronsted acids and Lewis acids. Multifunctional Dihydropyrimidones (DHPMs) are displayed wide medicinal properties. Several of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts have been reported to improve the yield of product. This review includes the progress of ionic liquids, combination of ionic liquids with homogeneous & heterogeneous catalyst, homogeneous, heterogeneous and asymmetric catalyst took place in last five year (2015-2019) for Biginelli reaction.
