ZmCCA1a on Chromosome 10 of Maize Delays Flowering of Arabidopsis thaliana

Abstract: Maize (Zea mays) is a major cereal crop that originated at low latitudes, and thus photoperiod sensitivity is an important barrier to the use of tropical/subtropical germplasm in temperate regions. However, studies of the mechanisms underlying circadian regulation in maize are at an early stage. In this study we cloned ZmCCA1a on chromosome 10 of maize by map-based cloning. The gene is homologous to the Myb transcription factor genes AtCCA1/AtLHY in Arabidopsis thaliana; the deduced Myb domain of ZmCCA1a showe… Show more

“…In maize, ZmCCT regulates the expression of a number of genes belonging to the floral induction pathway and to the circadian clock, such as ZmCOL9 and maize CIRCADIAN CLOCK ASSOCIATED 1 ( ZmCCA1 ), respectively. ZmCCA1 is an important clock component in maize and a positive regulator of a set of genes related to the general stress response, such as those encoding for the flagellin receptor FLS2 or the MAP kinases MKK1 and 2 [ 73 , 74 , 75 , 76 ]. OsCCA1 has been recently associated with ABA signalling and the response to multiple abiotic stresses [ 77 ].…”

“…This superfamily has been linked with the control of plant metabolism and to the response to biotic and abiotic stress in several species (55)(56)(57)(58)(59). A few members of this family were also found to be involved in the regulation of developmental processes such as flowering time (60,61), floral organ development (62) and shoot branching and axillary meristems formation (63).…”

“…Together with other grasses such as rice (12%), barley (5%), sorghum (2%) and maize (11%), grasses account for 50% of calories produced (D’Odorico et al, 2014). Information transfer between Arabidopsis and grasses was successful in the past (Pucker et al, 2020; Shi et al, 2020; Hughes and Langdale, 2022; Busche et al, 2023) and is highly desirable for conceptualizing breeding and gene editing of plants. Arabidopsis and the grasses share a common ancestor 150 million years ago (Chaw et al, 2004).…”
