Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles: A Review on Its Applications in Dentistry

Abstract: Nanotechnology in modern material science is a research hot spot due to its ability to provide novel applications in the field of dentistry. Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are metal oxide nanoparticles that open new opportunities for biomedical applications that range from diagnosis to treatment. The domains of these nanoparticles are wide and diverse and include the effects brought about due to the anti-microbial, regenerative, and mechanical properties. The applications include enhancing the anti-bacteri… Show more

“…), and probably due to release of Zn 2+ ions that can interact with essential constituents of the cells [ 11 ]. In addition, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) consider ZnO as generally recognized as safe (GRAS), which has a direct impact on the potential uses: cosmetics, sunscreens, food packaging, paints, medical structures, drug delivery, dentistry, wound dressing, textile industry and other antimicrobial applications [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Therefore, ZnO NPs can be considered as a potential ideal candidate for water treatment processes.…”

“…Recent research has focused on its application in short-wavelength optoelectronic devices (Zargar et al 2020), Zhigang Zang et al, have studied the effect of ZnO nanoparticles decoration on different types of perovskite thin films to be used as optoelectronic materials (Li et al 2017;Wang et al 2020). ZnO nanoparticles has many different applications such as photocatalytic, dentistry and solar cell (Pushpalatha et al 2022;Wu et al 2022). More enticingly, results from prior theoretical and practical research have suggested that ZnO doped with appropriate transition metals can be used as diluted magnetic semiconductors (Sharma et al 2012;Siddheswaran et al 2013).Recently, transition metal oxide nanoparticles, such as zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium oxide (TiO 2 ), and tin oxide (SnO 2 ) that doped with a transition metal atoms have been studied in-depth for some applications.…”

“…Another metallic oxide material coated onto orthodontic appliances is ZnO. ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have photocatalytic bactericidal activity, wide antibacterial spectrum and low drug resistance ( Gharpure and Ankamwar 2020 ; Pushpalatha et al, 2022 ). The effect of coating five kinds of ZnO NPs onto NiTi archwires on inhibiting S. mutans was studied ( Gholami et al, 2021 ).…”
