“…ZnO therefore, has been used as a growth‐promoting feed additive besides its well‐known use as an active anti‐bacterial agent in a number of pharmaceuticals for skin disorders (Sawai ). However, the high level of dietary ZnO, which is mostly excreted into the feces unabsorbed (Pekas ; Hill ), poses substantial concerns regarding environmental pollution. European feed legislation therefore limits total dietary Zn in complete feed to a maximum of 150 ppm and sooner or later similar legislation may be adopted by non‐European countries as well.…”

“…In health, the physiologic mechanisms vary with each individual trace element. Zinc is excreted primarily in pancreatic secretions (38,39); iron is excreted as a component of the desquamation of intestinal cells (35) and can also be wasted as a consequence of occult hemorrhage; and copper is excreted from the liver into the gut via the bile in a form that is not readily reabsorbed (40,41). The excretion of both sodium and potassium is largely controlled by renal mechanisms under normal conditions of health, and only with diarrheal or emetic processes can the gastrointestinal loss of electrolytes exceed that of the kidneys.…”

“…Specifically, for the weight used, recommendations for meeting the nutritional requirements proposed by Rostagno et al (2011) are about 90 mg kg -1 of Zn. After the metabolism of this element in the animal, its excretion occurs mainly via feces (PEKAS, 1966) and can be disseminated in the soil via organic fertilization (GIROTTO et al, 2010). In toxic concentrations, Zn can damage soil fauna, because its retention occurs mainly in soil organic matter particles (ASHWORTH; ALLOWAY, 2004).…”
