Zerumbone, a Natural Plant Dietary Compound Induces Expression of Interleukin-12p70 Cytokine in Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells

Abstract: Objective: Despite possessing many biological activities as antiproliferative, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancerous, and zerumbone lacks any evidence for its immunomodulatory activity. This naturally occurring dietary compound needs to be developed as drug to support therapeutic claims in various infections and diseases. Methods: Hence, in this study, the immunomodulatory effects of zerumbone were investigated by evaluating the effect of this compound toward the lymphocytes proliferation in human p… Show more

“…Keong et al revealed ZER activates mice thymocytes, splenocytes and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) at dose dependent pattern [153]. A similar study assessed a commercially obtained ZER on human peripheral blood, where it showed that ZER activates human lymphocytes and upregulates interleukin-12p70 cytokine [154]. For neuroprotective effect of ZER, Hamdi et al reported that ZER oxide protects NG108-15 cells from H 2 O 2 induced oxidative stress [155].…”

“…Meanwhile, in several in vitro studies, it was found that zerumbone showed antiplatelet and anti-proliferative aggregations [26]. Dash et al [27] suggested that zerumbone could be utilized as a lead molecule in the world of herbal therapeutics functioning as an immunomodulator drug for the treatment of chronic infection and various autoimmune disorders.…”
