Zero Torque Compliant Mechanisms Employing Pre-buckled Beams

Abstract: The concept of a statically balanced mechanism with a single rotational degree-of-freedom is presented. The proposed device achieves static balancing by combining positive stiffness elements and negative stiffness elements within an annular domain. Two designs are discussed. The first is composed of an Archimedean spiral and two pinned-pinned pre-buckled beams. The overall mechanism is modeled via an analytical approach and the element dimensions are optimized. The optimal configuration is then tested through … Show more

“…18. In [49,50] such Pre-compressed Beams were designed to get a compliant CTM. The design was done using finite element software where some input parameters have to be chosen (material, width of the beams, allowed axial compression of the initial beam, the desired rotation angle of the CTM and the inclination angle between the beam and the in-and output rings) such that the design parameters of the pre-compressed beam are generated considering the stress limits.…”

“…Zhang et al (2019) proposed an integrated bidirectional torsional negative stiffness mechanism, which realized energy balance by coupling a negative stiffness unit with a positive system. The negative torsional stiffness provided by pre-compressed cam-roller mechanisms (Zhou et al, 2015; Zhang et al, 2020) and pre-buckling beams (Bilancia et al, 2020) were designed and discussed in literature.…”
