Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework‑8 (ZIF-8) modified titanium alloy for controlled release of drugs for osteoporosis

Abstract: The aim of this work was to prepare a biocompatible implant material that enables the release of drug for osteoporosis—risedronate. To achieve this goal, a titanium implant coated with a biocompatible Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework 8 (ZIF-8) layer was prepared that promotes osseointegration at the bone-implant interface. The modifications of the titanium alloy as well as sorption and desorption processes were confirmed using a variety of methods: SEM, EDS XPS, and FT-IR imaging (to determine surface modificati… Show more

“…Furthermore, the high-resolution N 1s spectra showed a peak at 398.4 eV in ZIF-8, while for the ZIF-8T catalysts, the N 1s peak shifted to a higher binding energy with increasing T ligand contents in ZIF-8T (Figure S8a). This result indicates that the addition of T ligands in ZIF-8T with an abundance of nitrogen atoms affects Zn–N bonding and free nitrogen . The N 1s peak in ZIF-8 can be deconvoluted into three peaks corresponding to −N–C, −N–Zn, −NH, , while ZIF-8T materials exhibits four peaks assigned to −N–C, −N–Zn, −N–N, and −NH (Figure S8b–f).…”

“…Here, ZIF-8 NPs in the culture medium agglomerated and precipitated frequently on the SLA surfaces after the pretreatment of MH5C@ZIF-8 for 24 h, which was somewhat similar to ZIF-8 coatings on titanium surfaces ( Liu et al, 2020b ). Previous studies exhibited that the functionalized ZIF-8 coatings deposited on titanium promoted the viabilities and the osteogenic property of osteogenic cells ( Sandomierski et al, 2022 ). Another study also demonstrated that ZIF-8-coated titanium surfaces enhanced the osteogenesis of the osteoblast and promoted new bone formations ( Zhang et al, 2017 ).…”

“…26 The overall performance of ZIF-based composites is expected to achieve further improvements in terms of synergistic effects by integrating the advantages of various components. 31 Considering that the properties of composites are mainly related to the types of components and interactions between separated components, the basic principle of construction is important for composites based on ZIF-8. 32 Some reported nanoscale material decorated ZIF-8 based composites have been developed for various applications such as Fe 2 O 3 @ZIF-8, 33 SnO 2 quantum dots@ZIF-8, 34 Fe 3 O 4 @ ZIF-8, 35 ZIF-8@reduced graphene oxide, 36,37 TiO 2 -ZIF-8, 38 Cu@ C@ZIF-8, 39 ZIF-8/polyaniline 40 and polypyrrole/ZIF-8.…”
