Since the 1970-ties, large azimuth changes in the equilibrium of quartz horizontal pendulums have been irregularly registered in the Geodynamic Laboratory in Książ. However, azimuth changes of the pendulums did not correlate with meteorological phenomena and the compensation phases of these changes excluded processes of gravitational creep of the rock massif. It was assumed that changes of these azimuths result from tectonic tilt of the rock massif. These were the first observations of contemporary tectonic activity in the Świebodzice Depression (SW Poland). Multiannual observations have allowed for determining temporal and amplitude characteristics of such tectonic activity. Intervals of tectonic activity last from several days to two weeks and are separated by periods of low activity or even no activity. During tectonic events, amplitudes of rock massif deformation reach values of several tens of tidal amplitudes. The distinguished characteristics of tectonic effects and their incidental character have been confirmed by water-tube tiltmeters (WT) activated in the Geodynamic Laboratory in the early 2000s. Unique conditions of the rock massif cause that the WTs, in connection with blocks of the rock massif separated by faults, are natural detectors of tectonic activity, allowing to determine the function of tectonic activity and its derivatives in the surrounding areas.

Geophysical data are used not only, in geological mapping, exploration of mineral resources, hydrogeology, but are also important for other branches such as environmental protection, civil engineering and archeology. That is why, within the project CzechGeo/EPOS (www.czechgeo.cz), geophysical data access is solved as a separate topic under the guidance of the Czech Geological Survey (hereinafter CGS). In accordance with the current needs of national and international activities (INSPIRE, EPOS, IAGA), an inventory of available data, its consolidation and harmonization according to national and international standards is conducted. The aim is to store securely and permanently valuable data, which in many cases cannot be reinstated. On the example from the Nízký Jeseník Mts. possible advantages and utilization of Archive data for mapping and verification of the movement tendencies gained from GNSS networks -EPN, EAST SUDETEN and MORAVA are demonstrated. Very valuable information for the interpretation of structural and tectonic conditions is provided by geophysical data (seismic reflection profiles, gravity and magnetic data, etc.) in the area of interest, especially in terms of monitoring the main fault systems and the character of the basement structures.

The study computes time-dependant earthquake probabilities on the basis of seismicity data mainly deriving from historic records. It provides a methodological approach useful for those countries where the scarcity of instrumental data and/or paleoseismological evidences requires that historical information shall be stressed. Thus, the conditional probability that damaging earthquakes (M ‡ 6) may occur in Italy in the next 30 years is shown, and the potential for the main worldwide known Italian cities with a cultural heritage is outlined. Earthquake probabilities are computed referring to the application of renewal processes, where the periodicity is analytically modelled by means of the Brownian Passage Time function; an estimate of the dispersion (i.e., uncertainty) introduced on probabilities is provided making use of Monte Carlo simulations. The computed probabilities refer to seismic source zones deriving from the spatial clustering of the historically documented seismicity. The computation of probabilities based on the interaction of earthquakes occurring in nearby zones, has been also attempted for a test area to explore the influence exerted by the stress transfer effect. The main findings of this study are that (1) seismic source zones in Southern Italy are the most prone to experience damaging earthquakes in the next 30-years, with conditional probabilities a large as 10%; and (2) the influence exerted by the earthquake interaction in increasing such probabilities, doesn't seem to be relevant, because the mean recurrence times of large earthquakes (above the threshold magnitude of six chosen in this study) are in general much longer than the time shortening produced by the stress transfer.
