Yttrium and lanthanum bis(phosphine-oxide)methanides: structurally diverse, dynamic, and reactive

Abstract: Homoleptic yttrium and lanthanum complexes of bis(phosphineoxide) methanides, RE(HPhL)3 and RE2(HMeL)6, promote the first rare-earth mediated Horner-Wittig and acid-base chemistry consistent with multifunctional reactivity (Lewis-acid/Brønstedbase).

“…A likely cause for the slow and incomplete propagation is the inhibition of the catalyst by the diphenylphosphinate functionality that may coordinate the yttrium center through its P=O group [46,47,48] and thereby prevent the effective coordination/activation of the β-lactone cycle. To further investigate this hypothesis, we studied the effect of a phosphinate additive on the ROP of a highly reactive β-lactone, namely rac-BPL OAll [25,49] (Scheme 3).…”

“…The most commonly used extractant ligands for Ce are acidic organophosphorus molecules, which include Cyanex 923, D2EHPA (2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid), and tributyl phosphate (Figure A). While phosphorus extractants have been widely used in these contexts, they do possess some marked disadvantages. These include general selectivity for late over early lanthanides, aqueous solubility, the tendency to form third phases under high loading, and environmental unfriendliness .…”

“…Phosphine oxides attracted great attention as promising extractants for 4(5)f-metal ions [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ]. The chemistry of 1,3-bis-phosphine oxides is rapidly developing, which is mainly because bis(phosphine oxides) are efficient ligands allowing diverse complexation with lanthanide and calcium ions [ 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ]. The great impact of the structure of the group linking two phosphine oxides on the complexation mode is worth noting.…”
