Increasing crop adaptability in terms of ensuring a stable level of productivity in the genotype – environment interaction is still the central problem of plant breeding theory and practice. The aim of the present study is to theoretically substantiate and practically test a scheme of multi-environment trials, as well as interpret experimental data using modern statistical tools for evaluation of the genotype by environment interaction, and highlight the best genotypes with combining yield performance and ecological stability at the final stage of the spring barley breeding process. For this purpose in the first year of competitive testing (2016) at the V. M. Remeslo Myronivka Institute of Wheat of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine we selected nine promising spring barley breeding lines. In 2017 and 2018 these breeding lines were additionally tested in two other scientific institutions located in different agroclimatic zones of Ukraine. For a more reliable assessment, the breeding lines were compared not only with standard cultivar, but also with ten spring barley cultivars widespread in agricultural production of Ukraine. Thus, for three years of competitive testing, we received experimental genotype-environmental data from seven environments, which represent a combination of contrasting agroclimatic zones (Central part of the Forest-Steppe, Polissia and Northern Steppe of Ukraine) and different years (2016–2018). Our results revealed significant variability of mean yield of genotypes, as well as cross-over genotype by environment interaction. The first two principal components of both AMMI and GGE biplot explained more than 80% of the genotype by environment interaction. In general, the peculiarities we revealed indicate the effectiveness of the proposed combination of spatial (agroclimatic zones) and temporal (years) gradients to identify the best spring barley genotypes with the optimal combination of yield performance and ecological stability. Using AMMI and GGE biplot models was effective for the comprehensive differentiation of genotypes in terms of wide and specific adaptability, as well as for qualitative characterization of test environments and providing mega-environment analysis. As a practical result of the multi-environment trial, four spring barley breeding lines have been submitted to the State Variety Testing of Ukraine as new cultivars MIP Sharm, MIP Tytul, MIP Deviz and MIP Zakhysnyk, respectively.

The purpose of this study was to measure the impacts of pre-anthesis drought during reproductive stages (GS31 and GS39) on triticale (X Triticosecale wittmak) yield and yield components. Four triticale genotypes (2 Local and 2 from the USA) were exposed to pre-anthesis drought stress at both the stem elongation stage (B-treatment) and flag leaf emergence stage (C-treatment). Grain yield was not affected by pre-anthesis stress. Under no stress conditions (A-treatment), a strong correlation was detected between grain yield and the number of grains per plant and plant height. Under B-treatment, yield was negatively correlated with spike length; under C-treatment, yield was positively correlated with the number of grains per plant. Drought stresses did not affect the number of grains per plant, thousand grain weight, and harvest index. This implied that the tested genotypes were drought tolerant since they form many tillers. When subjected to pre-anthesis drought it helps the plants to cover the soil surface and reduce water evaporation. JU and S1 showed fast pre-anthesis growth (early flowering cultivars), which makes them favored for further breeding. In contrast, N1 and N2 had slow pre-anthesis growth (late flowering cultivars), which enabled them to store more photosynthate pre-anthesis, which might compensate for the pre-anthesis drought effect on them.

Introducción. La incorporación de 40 mil hectáreas de cebada (Hordeum vulgare L.) para la industria de cerveza en Colombia, con una producción proyectada de 80 mil t año-1 en el periodo 2016 a 2026, permitirá reducir la importación en un 60 %; no obstante, el cumplimiento de esta meta requiere de variedades de cebada de alto rendimiento y calidad. Objetivo. Identificar una variedad de cebada con rendimiento de grano estable y superior a 2,6 t ha-1 asociada con tolerancia al volcamiento, menor severidad a la roya amarilla en la hoja y espiga y calidad física del grano para la industria cervecera. Materiales y métodos. Entre 2016 y 2017, se realizó una prueba de evaluación agronómica en la región Andina colombiana, en un diseño de bloques completos al azar, con ocho variedades de cebada de dos hileras introducidas a Colombia. Se determinaron: maduración fisiológica, volcamiento, severidad a Puccinia striiformis f. sp hordei en la hoja y espiga, rendimiento de grano y peso hectolítrico. Resultados. Las variedades Madi y S5 con rendimientos de grano de 2,89 y 2,61 t ha-1, respectivamente, fueron superiores en 24 y 16 % en relación con Metcalfe y 19 y 11 % en comparación con Maltera 5. Ambas variedades presentaron estabilidad fenotípica amplia, tolerancia al volcamiento, menor severidad de la roya en la hoja y espiga y con un peso hectolítrico apropiado para la industria cervecera. Conclusión. Las características de producción, estabilidad fenotípica y calidad física del grano, de las variedades Madi y S5, las vuelve candidatas comerciales para la industria cervecera y con dominio de recomendación en el altiplano Cundiboyacense en Colombia, previa validación con una prueba semi comercial.
