Yield, profitability, and prospects of irrigated Boro rice cultivation in the North-West region of Bangladesh

Abstract: The North-West (NW) region of Bangladesh is pivotal for the country’s agricultural development, mainly in producing irrigated Boro rice. However, increasing cost of irrigation water, fertilizers, labour and other inputs, and the spatio-temporal variation in actual yield, market price and profitability of rice, have added uncertainty to the sustainability of Boro rice cultivation. In this study, we evaluated the productivity, profitability, and prospect of Boro rice production using comprehensive field data col… Show more

“…More than 60% of the area is covered by these two varieties during Boro season [19]. Currently, Boro cultivation area recorded for 61% of total cropped area in the Rabi season, which contributes 55% of total rice production in the country [18]. Our findings are also similar to this results.…”

“…Whereas production contribution of Aman season was higher from 1969-70 to 1997-98. Boro season is less vulnerable to rice disease, pests and other natural calamities and government incentives on Boro cultivation more specifically on irrigation facilities increase the Boro cultivation area [6,18]. Moreover, after the release of two Boro mega varieties, BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 in 1994, the second silent green revolution of rice has occurred in Bangladesh.…”

“…By 2050, the population of Bangladesh will reach 215 million (United Nations, 2017) necessitating the production of additional 10 million tons of rice (Mainuddin and Kirby, 2015). Therefore, it is critical to select rice varieties that produce a high yield, have good grain quality, low production cost, are resistant to pests and diseases, and can withstand stresses (Mariano et al, 2012;Laborte et al, 2015;Kabir et al, 2019;Mainuddin et al, 2021). This study demonstrated that exotic rice varieties have higher yields and prices than domestic varieties.…”

“…Farmers prefer cultivating exotic rice cultivars to avoid yield losses due to abiotic and biotic stresses (Kabir et al, 2019). Additionally, the low production costs and high profit margins enable farmers to switch (Mainuddin et al, 2021) from domestic to exotic varieties. Food security and household welfare are two avenues by which the adoption of improve varieties may benefit farmers.…”
