Yield and nutrient uptake of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) as influenced by plant growth regulators

Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is one of the oldest annual herbs from the Pedaliaceae family. It is considered an essential crop, due to its nutritional properties of edible oil and economic viability. The oil from this seed crop has a high nutritional value such as protein and mineral content as well as an excellent source of antioxidant activity which helps in preventing chronic diseases. Due to increased health awareness, the worldwide sesame market demand is growing across the world. The physical properties of seeds can be useful for storage and processing. This knowledge plays a vital role in the preparation of the processing chain from seed to food. Due to this reason, the present study aimed to investigate the IC50 antioxidant activity as well as physical properties such as 1000 seed weight, seed size, geometric diameter, arithmetic diameter, bulk density, tapped density and porosity of among three selected sesame seed varieties (JCS 1020, Hima and Swetha) released from PJTSAU. Results concluded that the highest IC50 antioxidant activity (5.27 µg/ml) was found in JCS 1020 and Swetha sesame seed varieties. However, there was no significant difference in antioxidant activity, length, width, thickness, tapped density and arithmetic diameter of the selected PJTSAU sesame seed varieties. Among the sesame seed varieties, 1000-seed weight, bulk density and porosity showed significant differences at p<0.05 whereas geometric diameter had a significant difference at p<0.01.

Effect of integrated phosphorus management on productivity, nutrient uptake, nutrient content and soil properties of summer sesame (Sesamum indicum L.)

A study was carried out to know the impact of integrated phosphorus management on nutrient uptake, contentand soil properties ofsummer sesame during summer, 2018 in Gujarat under irrigated condition with 10 treatments i.e. 25 kg P2O5 /ha (100 % RDF), FYM @ 5 t/ha, VC @ 2 t/ha, 12.5 kg P2O5 /ha (50 % RDF) + PSB @ 5 ml/kg (seed treatment), FYM @ 2.5 t/ha + PSB @ 5 ml/kg (seed treatment), VC @ 1 t/ha + PSB @ 5 ml/kg (seed treatment), 12.5 kg P2O5 /ha (50% RDF) + FYM @ 2.5 t/ha, 12.5 kg P2O5 /ha (50 % RDF) + VC @ 1 t/ha, FYM @ 2.5 t/ha + VC @ 1 t/ha and FYM @ 2.5 t/ha + VC @ 1 t/ha + PSB @ 5 ml/kg (seed treatment) and 4 replications in a RBD. It is found that among ten treatments, application of 12.5 kg P2O5 /ha + VC @ 1 t/ha significantly increased the nutrient uptake and nutrient content of summer sesame compared to other treatments which has shown a positive impact on crop productivity and application of 12.5 kg P2O5 /ha + PSB @ 5 ml/kg has resulted in significantly higher available phosphorus and 12.5 kg P2O5 /ha + FYM @ 2.5 t/ha has lead to highest organic carbon in the soil.

Effect of nutrient management on summer sesame (Sesamum indicum L.)

A field experiment was carried out during the summer of 2022 at Navsari, Gujarat to study the effect of nutrient management on growth parameters, yield attributes, yield and quality parameters of sesame. The results revealed that application of 75% RDF+ Castor Cake (1 t/ha) recorded significantly higher plant height at harvest (105.51 cm), number of capsules/ plant (4.63), capsule length (4.10 cm), seed yield (1185.13 kg/ha), stalk yield (1771.35 kg/ha) and oil content (50.6 %). The lowest values for yield attributes and yield were found on application of Jivamrut (500 l/ha) per irrigation (Jivamrut applied at 1st, 2nd, 3rd irrigation by drenching). The experimental results showed that application of 75% RDF + Bio compost (2.5 t/ha) or Castor cake (1 t/ha) are promising for optimum yield and higher economic returns.
