Yersinia canariae sp. nov., isolated from a human yersiniosis case

Abstract: A Gram-negative rod from the Yersinia genus was isolated from a clinical case of yersiniosis in the United Kingdom. Long read sequencing data from an Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) MinION in conjunction with Illumina HiSeq reads were used to generate a finished quality genome of this strain. Overall Genome Related Index (OGRI) of the strain was used to determine that it was a novel species within Yersinia, despite biochemical similarities to Yersinia enterocolitica. The 16S ribosomal RNA gene accessions ar… Show more

“…The seven clades were named Yersinia frederiksenii 2, Yersinia frederiksenii 3, NEW 2, Yersinia kristensenii 2, Yersinia kristensenii 3, NEW 3 and NEW 4 [20]. NEW 2 corresponds to Yersinia canariae, the species recently described by Nguyen et al [19]. The present study aimed to determine the taxonomic status of the six remaining putative novel species, using a polyphasic approach.…”

“…A maximum-likelihood phylogenetic tree based on 500 concatenated translated core genes aligned by Le Guern et al [4] shows an extremely similar topology to a Yersinia core genome alignment-based tree that was generated by Parsnp [3]. Thus Y.…”

“…The taxonomy of the Yersinia genus has experienced a recent expansion with the description of several new species within the past two years [1–4]. Three Yersinia species are important human zoonotic pathogens with Yersinia pestis responsible for some of the most impactful pandemics in recorded human history [5].…”

“…enterocolitica (such as biotype 1A) have been found in stools from asymptomatic humans [20, 21], thus identification of Yersinia species from stools is not always indicative of pathogenicity, especially if these isolates do not carry the pYV plasmid. However, our laboratory has characterized another novel Yersinia species that was recovered from a clinical yersiniosis case where the isolate did not carry the pYV virulence plasmid [22].…”
