Y junctions in photonic crystal channel waveguides: high transmission and impedance matching

Abstract: We investigate the efficiency of transmission through photonic crystal Y junctions and show the importance of matching mode symmetries. Furthermore, we show that by adding tuning holes to the input waveguide it is possible to achieve almost perfect impedance matching, leading ideally to unitary transmission through the junction. The model system is based on a triangular photonic lattice of holes in dielectrics to reflect experimental reality.

“…Ideally, the basic structure of a splitter is to separate the injected optical signal into a set of outputs which will be divided equally in the ideal case. There are some possible alternative approaches to guiding and splitting optical power from incoming signal into two or more output waveguides such as Y-junctions [1]- [2], T-junctions [3]- [4], directional coupling structure [5], multi-mode interference (MMI) waveguide [6], and self-collimated beams splitter [7][8], etc.…”

“…Efficient distributed feedback is obtained by introducing a periodic modulation of the refractive index to the active material. Until now, efforts have been focused on demonstrating new functionalities of twodimensional photonic crystals, such as couplers, 7 filters, 8 waveguides, 9 and lasers, 10 using mature fabrication tools developed for silicon and semiconductor technology. Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) has been proposed as a candidate of high-resolution lithography for high volume and costeffective production over large areas with sub-10 nm resolution.…”
