Xylitol and erythritol inhibit real-time biofilm formation of Streptococcus mutans

Abstract: Background Regular consumption of xylitol decreases the number of cariogenic streptococci in dental plaque. In vitro biofilm models to study the mechanism of xylitol action have been set-up, but the obtained results are contradictory. Biofilm growth is a dynamic process with time-specific characteristics that may remain undetected in conventional end-point biofilm tests. In this study we used an impedance spectroscopy instrument, xCELLigence Real Time Cell Analyzer (RTCA), that allows label-free, non-invasive … Show more

“…Any inhibition of these three genes prevents S. mutans colonization and growth. The competence regulation comDE gene is responsible for bacitracin production, cell formation, and competence [ 37 , 38 ]. So the inhibition of comDE by GA-AgNPs will paralyze the formation and survival of S. mutans in oral cavity.…”

“…The gyra A gene studied is also an important virulent gene of S. mutans. The DNA gyrase encoding gyra A is a housekeeping gene offers protection to S.mutans against antibiotics and environmental stress [ 38 , 39 ]. In the present study, the synthesized GA-AgNPs inhibited the virulence of gyra Agene.…”

“…[331] The beneficial effects of the five-carbon polyol xylitol on oral health are also well-known. [332,333] Loimaranta et al [334] studied the mechanism of xylitol action on S. mutans biofilm by means of impedance spectroscopy. This method allowed label-free, noninvasive, and real-time monitoring of biofilm formation in presence or not of xylitol.…”

“…Lower levels of polysaccharide content and expression of genes involved in glucan-mediated biofilm formation, including gbpB, gtfB, gtfC and gtfD, were also detected. Xylitol was also found to prevent surface attachment of otopathogens by reducing biofilm formation [109].…”
