Poeciliids, a family of live-bearing freshwater fish, including among others platyfish, swordtails and guppies, fully illustrate the diversity of genetic sex determination mechanisms observed in teleosts. Besides unisexuality, a variety of sex-determining systems has been described in this group of fish, including male and female heterogamety with or without autosomal influence, as well as more complicated situations such as multichromosomal and polyfactorial sex determination. Due to the presence of different mechanisms in closely related species or even between populations within a same species, poeciliids are a very attractive model to study the evolutionary dynamics of sex determination. For one species, the Southern platyfish Xiphophorus maculatus, positional cloning of the master sex-determining gene has been initiated through the construction and sequencing of bacterial artificial chromosome contigs covering the region differentiating the X from the Y chromosome. Initial analysis revealed a high plasticity of the sex-determining region and the absence of synteny with other fish and vertebrate sex chromosomes, indicating an independent evolutionary origin.

Ramses och almarnaAbu Simbel och välfärdssamhällets kulturarvsstrider ingrid berg Almstriden har kommit att bli en ikonisk händelse i svensk kulturhistoria. Under några intensiva månader 1970-1971 utkämpades en politisk och medial kamp för att rädda 13 almträd i Kungsträdgården i centrala Stockholm. Träden stod i vägen för bygget av en ny tunnelbanestation och tillhörande parkeringshus -ett av många byggprojekt i den så kallade cityomvandlingen av huvudstadens stadskärna. 1 I december 1970 hölls en av alla otaliga debatter runt almarnas vara eller icke-vara i Stockholms stadsfullmäktige. 2 Börje Kant från Centerpartiet föreslog att almarna kanske kunde flyttas till en ny plats. Inspirationen var flytten av Abu Simbel-templen i södra Egypten som riskerade att dränkas av Assuandammens utbyggnad några år tidigare. Räddningsaktionen hade varit Unescos första stora kulturarvsprojekt sedan dess tillblivelse efter andra världskriget, och svenska aktörer hade varit centrala i aktionen.Varför diskuterades forntida egyptiska tempel i Stockholms stadsfullmäktige? Flytten av templen i Abu Simbel är på många sätt Egyptens, Unescos och västvärldens egen almstrid -en medialt mycket uppmärksammad kamp mot klockan för att bevara en äldre kulturmiljö undan modernitetens framfart. Både almstriden och flytten av templen i Nubien är produkter av liknande samtida historiska skeenden -en konflikt som fördes i olika nationella och transnationella kontexter mellan å ena sidan det
