XPS Study of the reduction of cerium dioxide

Abstract: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of cerium oxides is discussed. The well-resolved 3d3,, (5d 6s)' 4f0 2p6 peak at 916.70 eV cannot be used for calculating the amount of reduction because the correlation between its intensity and the concentration of Ce(1V) and Ce(II1) species is not linear. We have therefore developed a complete analysis of the whole spectrum. The deconvolution procedure is explained in detail and the method is applied to two examples: a CeO,/AI,O, sample and a Pd/CeO, catalyst reduced under hy… Show more

“…Thermodynamic calculations were used to explain the significant loss of oxygen occurs during ablation of various transition-metal oxides [28,29], that were consistent with the formation of sub-stoichiometric metal oxides reported by Sol and Tilley. They noted color modifications of the surface when stoichiometric metal oxides were irradiated at 308 nm with laser irradiance in the 3.2 ϫ 10 5 Ϫ 1.4 ϫ 10 8 W/cm 2 range [30].…”

“…The spectra were decomposed to calculate Ce 3+ contribution. [12] Therefore, Ce 3+ percentage was calculated to be about 28% for P20C/Al 2 O 3 -La and 29% for P20C/Al 2 O 3 -Si. Lanthana-modified sample reduced at 800 • C and passivated with O 2 /He as described in the experimental section was also analyzed.…”

“…The binding energy of the Au (4f7/2) at 84.0±0.1 eV was used to calibrate the binding energy scale of the spectrometer, and ratios of Ce 3 þ and Ce 4 þ in the samples were determined. 62,63 Statistics. Results were collected from three or more independent experiments and are expressed as mean ± S.D.…”
