XML-Based Video Game Description Language

Abstract: This paper presents the XML-based Video Game Description Language (XVGDL), a new language for specifying Video games which is based on the Extensible Markup Language (XML). The proposal is portable and extensible, and allows games to not only be defined at engine level but also includes specific features that can lead the game design process whilst simultaneously reducing the gap between game specification and its corresponding game implementation. XVGDL is as generic as possible, making it possible to describ… Show more

“…A language that adapts to legible documentation due to its hierarchical structure and the possibility of association between different tags is the XML extensible markup language [20]. In the literature, the XML language has been used for the description of games [7,21,22]. Using the XML language, the format chosen to describe the interaction between blocks is the DTD (document type definition) since it is possible to describe, restrict and verify structures in a document, in addition to being able to make declarations of various elements [23].…”

“…Extensible markup language (XML) is increasingly used for data exchange and transfer [1], [2], such as in electronic publishing, web services, e-business, and search engines. In addition to the standard format for exchanging data, XML is one of the NoSQL database models [3], [4] and a new language for specifying video games, called the XMLbased video game description language (XVGDL) [5]. Because of its high availability and scalability, XML has rapidly gained attention [6].…”
