Xanthate-Modified Magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2-Based Polyvinyl Alcohol/Chitosan Composite Material for Efficient Removal of Heavy Metal Ions from Water

Abstract: Chitosan has several shortcomings that limit its practical application for the adsorption of heavy metals: mechanical instability, a challenging separation and recovery process, and low equilibrium capacity. This study describes the synthesis of a magnetic xanthate-modified polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan composite (XMPC) for the efficient removal and recovery of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. The XMPC was synthesized from polyvinyl alcohol, chitosan, and magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles. The XMPC wa… Show more

“…A variety of methods [ 2 , 3 , 4 ], including physical (e.g., sedimentation, filtration, flotation), chemical (e.g., coagulants, flocculants, disinfectants), physico-chemical (i.e., the adsorption of contaminants by various materials [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]) and biological processes, are commonly used to treat wastewater. Among these, biological methods are considered to be environmentally friendly and have relatively low operating and implementation costs.…”

“…Verma et al [35] also found that sand-filter methods are effective for the elimination of heavy metals and organic pollutants from sewage wastewater, making the water fit for the irrigation of agricultural land. Chitosan-based absorbents were also used by different plant researchers for the removal of heavy metals [36][37][38].…”

“…The drawbacks of chitosan are its low sorption capacity, sensitivity to the pH of the aqueous phase, limited reuse, poor mechanical properties, and low stability in acidic media [ 24 ]. To increase the sorption capacity, chitosan is modified with compounds containing donor nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur atoms, which makes the process more expensive [ 25 , 26 , 27 ].…”
