X-ray powder diffraction data for δ-Na2Si2O5

Abstract: The X-ray powder diffraction data for δ-Na2Si2O5 are reported. The sample was prepared from water glass solution applied to pressed powder tablets of finely ground quartz using a heating program with a maximal temperature of 700 °C. The crystallographic data for δ-disilicate obtained from a Rietveld analysis are: space group P21/n, a=8.3818(4) Å, b=12.0726(5) Å, c=4.8455(2) Å, β=90.303(5)°, V=490.31 Å3, Z=4, and Dcalc.=2.468 g/cm3.

“…The author believed that the δ-phase had a layer structure with two independent SiO 4 tetrahedrons in the asymmetric unit and that the layers were connected by the sodium cations. Then, the structure of the compound was further investigated by V. Kahlenberg et al [25,27]. Basing on the XRD data of the present δ-Na 2 Si 2 O 5 , the refined cell parameters are more close to the reported result [31], which may be relative to the synthetical processing.…”

“…The X-ray powder diffraction pattern of the δ-Na 2 Si 2 O 5 was initially indexed based on an orthorhombic unit cell (a =12.07 Å; b = 8.37 Å; c =4.84 Å) [26]. Subsequently, the crystal structure of δ-Na 2 Si 2 O 5 has been reinvestigated and it was found that this silicate presented a monoclinic structure with space group P 21/n (a =8.39 Å; b =12.08 Å; c =4.84 Å; β = 90.37) [25,27]. This special layered structure of δ-Na 2 Si 2 O 5 means that the layered silicate has other properties and applications in addition to decreasing the hardness of water.…”

“…1. Almost all peaks in each pattern were attributed to the d-Na 2 Si 2 O 5 phase, 26 suggesting that the main product is d-Na 2 Si 2 O 5 . However, in addition to those peaks, several peaks assignable to b-Na 2 Si 2 O 5 appeared at 14.9, 20.8, 21.5 and 30.1u 27 and the peak intensity gradually increased with the Al/Si ratios.…”
