The pseudogap (PG) derived from the analysis of the excess conductivity σ ′ (T ) in superlattices and double-layer films of YBa2Cu3O 7−δ − PrBa2Cu3O 7−δ (YBCO-PrBCO), prepared by pulsed laser deposition, is studied for the first time. The σ ′ (T ) analysis has been performed within the local-pair (LP) model based on the assumption of the paired fermion (LPs) formation in the cuprate highTc superconductors (cuprates) below the representative temperature T * ≫ Tc resulting in the PG opening. Within the model, the temperature dependencies of the PG, ∆ * (T ), for the samples with different number of the PrBCO layers (NP r ) were analyzed in the whole temperature range from T * down to Tc. Near Tc, σ ′ (T ) was found to be perfectly described by the Aslamasov-Larkin (AL) and Hikami-Larkin (HL) [Maki-Thompson (MT) term] fluctuation theories, suggesting the presence of superconducting fluctuations in a relatively large (up to 15 K) temperature range above Tc. All sample parameters were found to change with increase of NP r , finally resulting in the appearance of the pronounced maximum of ∆ * (T ) at high temperatures. The result is most likely due to increasing influence of the intrinsic magnetism of PrBCO (µP r ≈ 4 µB) and suggests the possibility to search in that way the change of interplay between the superconductivity and magnetism in cuprates.

The self-interaction-corrected local-spin-density approximation is used to describe the electronic structure of dioxides, REO 2 , and sesquioxides, RE 2 O 3 , for the rare earths, RE=Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy and Ho. The valencies of the rare earth ions are determined from total energy minimization. We find Ce, Pr, Tb in their dioxides to have the tetravalent configuration, while for all the sesquioxides the trivalent groundstate configuration is found to be the most favourable. The calculated lattice constants for these valency configurations are in good agreement with experiment.Total energy considerations are exploited to show the link between oxidation and f -electron delocalization, and explain why, among the dioxides, only the CeO 2 , PrO 2 , and TbO 2 exist in nature.Tetravalent NdO 2 is predicted to exist as a metastable phase -unstable towards the formation of hexagonal Nd 2 O 3 .

In this work, the evolution of the excess conductivity of the YВа 2 Сu 3 О 7−δ single crystals under electron irradiation is studied. It is shown that irradiation with electrons leads to a significant expansion of the temperature interval that excess conductivity exists. Therefore, the value of the transverse coherence length ξ с (0) increases by a factor of 1.4 and the point of the 2D-3D crossover shifts with respect to the temperature.
