Workforce Characteristics of Mohs Surgery Fellows

Abstract: Further research is needed to discover potential factors that may be playing a role in the increased popularity of Mohs surgery. The number of Mohs surgeons is increasing and is likely to expand over time. It remains to be seen what effect the growth will have on the supply of Mohs surgery and whether it will outpace the increased demand for services.

“…As more trainees pursue surgically oriented fellowship training, the proportions could continue to evolve. 27 Interestingly, although our results did confirm a persistent gender gap in average work hours, this gap is attributable to differences in surgical time: female dermatologists are spending as many hours on medical dermatology as their male colleagues. It is unclear whether these observed patterns will continue as the increasing number of women in the dermatology residency pipeline (now 62%) 28 continues to enter the workforce.…”

“…The increasing number of graduating residents pursuing Mohs fellowships is in concordance with these data. [3][4][5] These numbers have particular importance in relation to the projected work force needs for medical dermatologists. [2][3][4] The typical Mohs surgeon performs between 501 and 1,000 cases per year, with an almost equal distribution above and below this grouping.…”
