This research aims to explore the relationship between the course performance of students in the Merchant Marine Cadetship Program (MMCP), specifically in MMCP-2, and various components of the Life Values Inventory (LVI). By analyzing these associations, the study determined the influence of MMCP training on the development of critical values among maritime students. The study collected data from maritime students enrolled in MMCP-2 using the Life Values Inventory questionnaire. Correlation analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between course performance and life values. Demographic profiles were also analyzed to explore potential influences on life values. The study utilized existing research to support and contextualize the findings. The findings revealed that achievement, concern for the environment, and privacy were highly valued by the respondents. These values were aligned with the emphasis on achievement within the institution and the maritime industry's environmental regulations. Conversely, scientific understanding, humility, and financial prosperity were devalued. This raises concerns as scientific understanding and humility are important for the competence and leadership development of maritime professionals. Additionally, financial prosperity should be recognized and promoted among students. The study highlights the need for revisions in the MMCP-2 course content to align with the essential life values for maritime students. Enhancements should focus on promoting scientific understanding, humility, and financial prosperity. The MMCP should develop programs that foster the development of these values through mentoring, leadership development, and environmental awareness initiatives. Furthermore, educating students about financial management and career prospects can help them appreciate the importance of financial prosperity.

PurposeEmbedded in higher educational settings, work-integrated learning (WIL) is a key reflection to students' perceived employability. The purpose of this study is to explore the antecedents of internal and external perceived employability. The research attempts to test a theoretical model examining the relationships among human capital, work values, career self-management, internal perceived employability and external perceived employability.Design/methodology/approachData were collected from 588 students who have internship experience from two self-financing higher education institutions in Hong Kong. We adopted structural equation modelling (SEM) to test the proposed research hypotheses.FindingsResults support the idea that human capital and intrinsic work values are significant antecedents of perceived employability. Furthermore, this relationship is fully mediated by career self-management. The implications of the findings for understanding the process through which psychological variables affect an individual's perceived employability are discussed.Originality/valuePrevious studies have extensively examined the effectiveness of WIL in increasing graduates' employability. However, unclear focus has been given to examine psychological attributes, such as human capital, work values and career self-management in WIL. In addition, few researchers have empirically examined the linkages among human capital, work values, career self-management and employability through internships or WIL experiences. Therefore, to bridge these gaps, the present study examines the effect of human capital, work values and career self-management on students' perceived employability when gaining internships or WIL experiences in a higher education setting.

As an important factor in predicting the future sustainable development of college students, career decision-making (CDM) has attracted widespread attention in the field of vocational education. Based on Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), this study proposed a moderated mediation model to investigate the relationship between work values and CDM, the mediating role of career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE), and the moderating effect of career goals. A total of 1300 questionnaires were collected using the snowball sampling method, and 1203 valid questionnaires were collected. The differences in background variables were examined by the independent sample t-test, and the validity of the research hypotheses was tested by SEM and multigroup analysis. The results of the study showed the following: (1) There were significant differences in CDM performance among college students of different genders and different grades. (2) CDMSE plays a partial mediating role between work values and career decision-making. (3) Career goals play a moderating role between CDMSE and CDM, and compared with low-level career goals, high-level career goals can promote the impact of CDMSE on CDM. In the future, colleges and universities can promote college students’ CDM by shaping work values, improving CDMSE, and guiding the establishment of career goals.
