Introduction: Call center operators are voice professionals with great vocal demand and, consequently, are exposed to voice disorders. Purpose: Characterize vocal and laryngeal aspects among operators of a call center that follows the regulatory standards in ergonomics by measuring voice self-perception, otorhinolaryngological evaluation, and voice perceptualauditory analysis. Methods: The study assessed 30 call center operators between 18 and 41 years old. All subjects were assessed using the Escala de Sintomas Vocais (ESV) -the Brazilian version of the Voice Symptom Scale (VoiSS) -, otorhinolaryngological evaluation using fiberoptic video rhinolaryngoscopy, and voice perceptual-auditory assessment using the GRBASI scale that evaluates degree of voice alteration (G), voice roughness (R), breathiness (B), asthenia (A), strain (S), and instability (I). Results:The ESV showed a correlation between the overall domain and the other subdomains and between the subdomains limitation and physical. The otorhinolaryngological evaluation revealed that 12 operators had some alteration such as secretion accumulation during phonation and glottic chinks. The voice perceptual-auditory analysis found individuals with normal voice and with slight to moderate degree of alteration, besides a correlation between the item instability in the GRBASI scale and the overall degree, roughness, breathiness, and asthenia. Conclusion: Proper work environments that provide care with voice may improve labor quality of call center professionals, thus mitigating the risks of developing voice disorders. Nonetheless, physical, social, environmental, organizational, and psychological factors may cause voice symptoms among those voice professionals. Purpose: Check the number of vocal symptoms reported by teachers and the relationship with the self-perception of the limitations of daily activities associated to the voice, personal, occupational and clinical aspects. Methods: Refers to a study performed by the analysis of secondary data from medical records of teachers attended at the voice ambulatory of a teaching hospital. The informations of interest were: age, number of taught shifts, parallel activities to teaching, fan use, conversational noise, dust, construction noise, external noise, screaming, smoking habit, hydration, pellet use, physical activity associated with speech, type and degree of dysphonia, proprioceptive vocal symptoms and responses to the Protocol of the Profile of Participation and Vocal Activities (PPVA). It was realized a descriptive and inferential analysis. Results: Were collected informations of 103 medical records, where it was found high prevalence of vocal symptoms, with the most frequent: fatigue after prolonged use of the voice, dry throat, throat clearing and burning. It was observed an association between the number of vocal symptoms and the scream habit, conversational noise and perception of the impact of dysphonia by teachers. The number of self-reported vocal symptoms was positively correlated with all parameters evaluated by PPVA. Conclusion: There is high frequency of proprioceptive vocal symptoms among the teachers. The noise of conversation and scream habit are associated with the number of vocal symptoms, as well as the parameters of self-perception of the impact of dysphonia contained in the PPVA.

Tracking Occupational Voice State with a Visual Analog Scale: Voice Quality, Vocal Fatigue, and Effort

Background Due to elevated vocal health risk in industries such as call centers, there is a need to have accessible and quick self‐report tools for voice symptoms. This study aimed to determine if the concurrent and construct validity of three visual analog scales (VASs) of voice quality and symptoms could be used as a screening tool in call center agents. Methods A cross‐sectional study was carried out in three call center companies. The Voice Handicap Index‐10 (VHI‐10) and a vocal hygiene and symptoms survey were administered to 66 call center workers. Further, acoustic parameters including harmonics‐to‐noise ratio (HNR), smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPs), L1‐L0 slope, and Alpha ratio were collected. Finally, workers completed three VASs capturing self‐perception of vocal effort (VAS‐1), voice quality (VAS‐2), and vocal fatigue (VAS‐3). Linear regression models with bootstrapping evaluated the possible relationship between the three VASs measurements, self‐perceived vocal symptoms, and acoustic parameters. Results VAS‐1 scores were associated with HNR and voice breaks, VAS‐2 with voice breaks, and VAS‐3 with Alpha ratio. Using the area under a receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), the highest AUC for detecting an altered VHI‐10 questionnaire score was observed for the three VASs. Also, the highest AUC for detecting altered CPPs was reached for the VAS‐1. Conclusions VAS as a self‐report instrument of vocal symptoms is related to psychosocial voice impairment and alterations of acoustic voice parameters in call center workers.
