Work function of MgO single crystals from ion-induced secondary electron emission coefficient

Abstract: The work functions φω of MgO single crystals with its respective orientation (111), (200), and (220) have been investigated from their ion-induced secondary electron emission coefficient γ, respectively, using various ions with different ionization energies in a γ-focused ion beam system. The work function φω for MgO single crystal with (111) orientation has the lowest value, 4.22 eV, whereas it is 4.94 eV for (200) and the highest value is 5.07 eV for (220). These work functions of MgO single crystals can exp… Show more

“…In view of the close relationship between _ VO 2 max and performance in rowing (Secher et al 1982), it was of interest to investigate whether this performance was related to a preservation of _ VO 2 max , in contradiction with what was suggested by most studies (Donato et al 2003;Evans et al 1995;Jones 1998;Padilla et al 2000;Tanaka and Seals 1997), or if alternatively it accounted for improvement of any other physiological ability underlying rowing performance, which compensated for the decrease in _ VO 2 max . The main purpose of the present study was thus to describe physiological changes in an individual rower over a 10-year period spanning ages 26 to 36, including a 6-year international competition period during which he obtained six medals.…”

“…Recent studies reported that the age-related decline in freestyle swimming performance depended on both the race distance and the sex of the athletes (Donato et al 2003; Tanaka and Seals 1997). For example, it has been shown that, firstly, the age-related decline in freestyle swimming performance was greater for 1,500 m than for 50 m, and, secondly, this decline was more pronounced for women than for men in 50 m (Donato et al 2003; Tanaka and Seals 1997).…”

In women, the decline in swimming performance with advancing age from the 19- to 24-years to the 69- to 74-years age groups became progressively greater from the shortest distance ( i.e.…”
