Background Workplace violence in healthcare settings is a significant public concern that profoundly impacts healthcare workers. However, there is a dearth of knowledge regarding the prevalence of workplace violence and its correlation with suicidal ideation among undergraduate medical students in China during their clinical training. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of workplace violence inflicted by patients or their family members/visitors and to assess its association with suicidal ideation among undergraduate medical students. Method The snowballing sampling technique was used to recruit Chinese medical students. A question designed by the research team was used to ask medical students about their encounters with workplace violence. Students’ basic demographic information and mental distresses (learning burnout, depression symptoms, anxiety symptoms, alcohol abuse/dependence, excessive daytime sleepiness and history of mental disorders) were also assessed. As appropriate, the data were analysed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, independent-sample t -tests and multiple logistic regression. Results Out of the 1402 undergraduate medical students who participated, 493 (35.2%) reported having experienced workplace violence inflicted by patients or their family members/visitors, of which 394 (28.1%) were verbal abuse, 14 (1.0%) were physical aggression, and 85 (6.1%) were suffered from both verbal abuse and physical aggression. Furthermore, students exposed to workplace violence were more likely to report suicidal ideation and had a higher prevalence of learning burnout, depression symptoms, anxiety symptoms, alcohol abuse/dependence and excessive daytime sleepiness. Depression symptoms, history of mental disorders, learning burnout and having a partner were significantly associated with suicidal ideation in this population. Conclusion The prevalence of workplace violence inflicted by patients or their family members/visitors was high among undergraduate medical students in China. This may be associated with their mental distress and suicidal ideation. Consequently, it is crucial to strengthen workplace safety measures and promptly implement interventions to mitigate the potentially serious consequences.

Background Family doctor contract service is an important part of primary health care in China, serving a large number of special population. Burnout of family doctor team members(FDTMs) can affect the quality of primary health care, so the high level of burnout among family doctor team members(FDTMs) is a major challenge for strengthening primary health care services. However, few studies examine the status of burnout among FDTMs. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of burnout on the FDTMs and factors associated with burnout. Methods A cross-sectional design was used to collect data from September 2020 to January 2021, with a self-administered structured questionnaire from 749 FDTMs in Guangzhou, China. The status of burnout was evaluated using the Chinese Maslach Burnout Inventory (CMBI) with three dimensions: emotional exhaustion(EE), depersonalization(DP), and reduced personal accomplishment (PA). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, variance analysis and stepwise linear regression analysis. Results Of the respondents, the detection rate of burnout reached to 69.83%, 19.76% of members had EE, 38.58% suffered from DP, and 53.40% were exposed to PA. FDTMs who were re-employed, with higher workload, under the age of 30, with lower income, with long working years, cannot balance work and family life, cannot adapt to the working environment, work with clients unharmoniously, and had lower level of professional identity and job satisfaction reported a higher degree of burnout. Conclusion Burnout has become prevalent among FDTMs in Guangzhou, China. Multiple strategies are needed to reduce some high-risk groups' vulnerability to burnout, such as improving doctor-patient relationships, providing safer workplace environments, increasing professional identity and job satisfaction.

PurposeThis study investigates the relationship between family incivility (FI) and burnout in line with the conservation of resources theory and work–home resources model. The authors also examine the conditional indirect effects of psychological capital (PsyCap) and life satisfaction (LS) in the aforementioned relationship. The purpose of this paper is to address these issues.Design/methodology/approachData were collected using a time-lagged methodological design by administering a structured questionnaire among 296 rural doctors. The collected data were analyzed using PROCESS macro in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 23.FindingsThe study indicates that FI is an emotional home demand and influences burnout at the workplace through the depletion of LS. At the same time, PsyCap proves to be a vital resource that mitigates the adverse effects of FI and burnout.Research limitations/implicationsThis study adds to the work–family and well-being literature by exploring the underlying mechanism through which FI connects to different outcomes. The implications of these findings for applications and extension of the work–home resources model to the family domain is elaborated in detail.Originality/valueThis study is among the first to empirically substantiate the long-term adverse consequences of FI and its potential for negatively affecting the work domain by inducing long-term psychological disorder “burnout.”
