Work Engagement among Rescue Workers: Psychometric Properties of the Portuguese UWES

Abstract: Rescue workers have a stressful and risky occupation where being engaged is crucial to face physical and emotional risks in order to help other persons. This study aims to estimate work engagement levels of rescue workers (namely comparing nurses, firefighters, and police officers) and to assess the validity evidence related to the internal structure of the Portuguese versions of the UWES-17 and UWES-9, namely, dimensionality, measurement invariance between occupational groups, and reliability of the scores. “…This supports Schaufeli and colleagues' (2002) original conceptualization work engagement is a three-dimensional construct. Moreover, similar findings can be found in work engagement studies (see, e.g., Sinval et al, 2018). Treating techno-work engagement as a second-order construct allows for the estimation of a single value (i.e., general score) for work engagement while retaining the three first-order factors (c.f.…”

“…Measurement invariance assesses whether an instrument is fair for different subgroups from a psychometric perspective (van de Schoot et al 2012), such as occupations (Sinval et al 2018), countries (Reis et al 2015), genders (Marsh et al 2010) and other groups. It can also be evaluated using different statistical approaches, with multigroup confirmatory factor analysis being the most popular (Davidov et al 2014).…”

“…The questionnaire allows to determine the following indicators: vigor, dedication and absorption. This questionnaire has a high validity and reliability confirmed in different languages and in large-scale cross-cultural studies (e.g., [25], [26]) including its Russian version (e.g., [27]).…”
