Women and men ‐ same eyes?

Abstract: In ophthalmology, few studies have been designed to investigate possible differences between women and men in a consistent manner. Some evidence is, however, available showing significance male-female differences. The importance of gender in ophthalmological research is emphasized by focusing on some knowledge about sex differences in ocular components in relation to cataract surgery and on the influence of the female hormones on the cornea.

“…2005). During the last two decades, there has been an increasing focus on possible gender differences in ophthalmological research and demonstrating important differences; these issues have also been discussed in Acta (Midelfart 1996). Previous studies analysing, for instance, keratoconus, dry eyes and age‐related macular degeneration (ARMD) have reported differences in incidence and prevalence of various disorders and different treatment results between men and women (McCarty et al.…”

“…The interest in gender-based differences in diseases and treatment effects is gaining in importance in health research (Fink et al 2005). “…Estudos demonstraram que o aumento da miopia nesses olhos é devido ao aumento do comprimento axial (16) . Estudos comparativos dos parâmetros biométricos do olho de ambos gêneros mostraram que o olho masculino é 0,4 a 0,8 mm maior que o feminino (17,18) . A diferença entre os gêneros é atribuída à profundidade da cavidade vítrea (17,19,20) .…”

“…[578910] The reasons for this include females’ shorter stature and possibly underlying genetic difference. [11] Several population-based studies have shown that sex is independently associated with ACD after the adjustment for body height (BH) in multivariate linear regression. [7101213] However, additional factors for adjustment varied in these studies, which could possibly affect the results of regression analysis.…”
