Women, Aging, and Alcohol Use Disorders

Abstract: The increase in prevalence rates of alcohol use disorders in younger versus older cohorts of female drinkers is many times higher than the corresponding increase in prevalence rates for male drinkers. Thus, the number and impact of older female drinkers is expected to increase over the next 20 years as the disparity between men's and women's drinking rates decrease. Due to differences in metabolism of alcohol, women of all ages compared to men are at higher risk for negative physical, medical, social, and psyc… Show more

“…43 Further, women are particularly vulnerable to medical consequences of heavy drinking, including liver disease, infertility, and mortality. 44,45 It is important to note that in this study, females drank more than males regardless of surgical manipulation. This is consistent with other reports in laboratory rodents, where females self-administer more alcohol under both continuous and binge-like access conditions and in operant procedures.…”

“…The rate at which alcohol-induced diseases begin after the onset of alcohol use is as follows: in men, it begins on an average of 7-9 years and in women, in 3-4 years (by episodic drinking, constant drinking, binge drinking and constant drinking)! 22 Clinical manifestations of the disease in women are not only growing faster, but often have more severe consequences. First of all, the master of the disease syndrome-craving for alcohol-can be extremely intense, often stubbornly defying health effects and is easily revived under the influence of a variety of reasons.…”

“…As the difference between women's and men's drinking rates decrease, the number and impact of older female drinkers is expected to increase, and due to differences in metabolism of alcohol, women are at higher risk for negative physical, medical, social, and psychological consequences associated with higher levels of alcohol consumption [70,71]. Cannabis users described by Guillem et al were in a greater percentage female, older, more dependent on marijuana, and with a high prevalence of affective and anxiety disorders [72].…”
