The real-time knowledge of information concerning traffic light junctions represents a valid solution to congestion problems with the main aim to reduce, as much as possible, accidents. The Red Light Running (RLR) is a behavioural phenomenon that occurs when the driver must to choose to cross (or not) the road when the traffic light changes from green to yellow. Most of the time the drivers cross even during transitions from yellow to red and, as a consequence, the possibility of accidents increases. This often occurs because the drivers wait too much in the traffic light queue as a consequence of the fact that the traffic light is not well balanced. In this paper we propose a technique that, based on information gathered through a wireless sensor network, dynamically processes green times in a traffic light of an isolated intersection. The main aim is to optimise the waiting time in the queue and, as a consequence, reduce the RLR phenomenon occurrence.

The design of sustainable wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a very challenging issue. On the one hand, energyconstrained sensors are expected to run autonomously for long periods. However, it may be cost-prohibitive to replace exhausted batteries or even impossible in hostile environments. On the other hand, unlike other networks, WSNs are designed for specific applications which range from small-size healthcare surveillance systems to large-scale environmental monitoring. Thus, any WSN deployment has to satisfy a set of requirements that differs from one application to another. In this context, a host of research work has been conducted in order to propose a wide range of solutions to the energysaving problem. This research covers several areas going from physical layer optimization to network layer solutions. Therefore, it is not easy for the WSN designer to select the efficient solutions that should be considered in the design of application-specific WSN architecture.We present a top-down survey of the trade-offs between application requirements and lifetime extension that arise when designing wireless sensor networks. We first identify the main categories of applications and their specific requirements. Then we present a new classification of energy-conservation schemes found in the recent literature, followed by a systematic discussion as to how these schemes conflict with the specific requirements. Finally, we survey the techniques applied in WSNs to achieve trade-off between multiple requirements, such as multi-objective optimisation.

Inadequate space and funds for the construction of new roads and the steady increase in number of vehicles has prompted scholars to investigate other solutions to traffic congestion. One area gaining interest is the use of smart traffic control systems (STCS) to make traffic routing decisions. These systems use real time data and try to mimic human reasoning thus prove promising in vehicle traffic control and management. This paper is a review on the motivations behind the emergence of STCS and the different types of these systems in use today for road traffic management. They include -fuzzy expert systems (FES), artificial neural networks (ANN) and wireless sensor networks (WSN). We give an in depth study on the design, benefits and limitations of each technique. The paper cites and analyses a number of successfully tested and implemented STCS. From these reviews we are able to derive comparisons of the STCS discussed in this paper. For instance, for a learning or adaptive system, ANN is the best approach; for a system that just routes traffic based on real time data and does not need to derive any data patterns afterwards, then FES is the best approach; for a cheaper alternative to the FES, then WSN is the least costly approach. All prove effective in traffic control and management with respect to the context in which each of them is used.
