Today, through the monitoring of agronomic variables, the wireless sensor networks are playing an increasingly important role in precision agriculture. Among the emerging technologies used to develop prototypes related to wireless sensor network, we find the Arduino platform and XBee radio modules from the DIGI Company. In this article, based on field tests, we conducted a comparative analysis of received strength signal intensity levels, calculation of path loss with ''log-normal shadowing'' and free-space path loss models. In addition, we measure packet loss for different transmission, distances and environments with respect to an ''Arduino Mega'' board, and radio modules XBee PRO S1 and XBee Pro S2. The tests for the packet loss and received strength signal intensity level show the best performance for the XBee Pro S2 in the indoor, outdoor, and rural scenarios.

The quality of sleep affects the patient’s health, along with the observation of vital life signs such as body temperature and sweat in sleep, is essential in the monitoring of sleep as well as clinical diagnosis. However, traditional methods in recording physiological change amidst sleep is difficult without being intrusive. The smart pillow is developed to provide a relatively easy way to observe one’s sleep condition, employing temperature and humidity sensors by implanting them inside the pillow in strategic positions. With the patient’s head on the pillow, the roles of sensors are identified as main, auxiliary or environmental temperature, based on the differences of value from three temperature sensors, thus the pattern of sleep can be extracted by statistical analysis, and the body temperature is inferred by a specially designed Fuzzy Logic System if the head-on position is stable for more than 15 min. Night sweat is reported on data from the humidity sensor. Therefore, a cloud-based health-sensing system is built in the smart pillow to collect and analyze data. Experiments from various individuals prove that statistical and inferred results reflect normal and abnormal conditions of sleep accurately. The daily sleeping information of patients from the pillow is helpful in the decision-making of diagnoses and treatment, and users can change their habits of sleep gradually by observing the data with their health professional.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNS) have become an indispensable tool in this epoch of technological advancements, particularly for progress made in the Internet of things. Wireless sensor nodes are deployed to collect and transmit vital data from the environment to a base station for analysis. Nevertheless, the limited battery power of the sensor nodes is rapidly drained when they stay awake for an extended period. Research has shown that significant sources of energy dissipation of sensor nodes are idle listening, packet collision, control overhead, and overhearing. One optimal solution is employing a low duty cycle mac protocol, particularly the sensor mac (SMAC) protocol. It is essential to have a detailed knowledge of the challenges identified in SMAC and solutions suggested to mitigate these challenges and the future directions. In this paper, we review techniques in SMAC protocols implemented in WSNS. In particular, we provide highlights of recent developments in the schemes used in SMAC for mitigating the challenges in SMAC and present research gaps in SMAC protocol. Finally, we discuss open issues that need to be addressed to advance the design and implementation of SMAC in WSN applications.
