Wireless Backhaul in 5G and Beyond: Issues, Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract: With the introduction of new technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), high altitude platforms (HAPS), millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), and beamforming, wireless backhaul is expected to be an integral part of the 5G networks. While this concept is nothing new, it was shortcoming in terms of performance compared to the fiber backhauling. However, with these new technologies, fiber is no longer the foremost technology for backhauling. With the proje… Show more

“…However, the backhaul handling and SDN functionalities face several challenges due to unconventional technologies and stringent requirements of Beyond 5G technologies [117]. The presented scheme would require major evaluation related to emerging concepts, such as the topological merger of PtP (Point-to-Point)/ PtM (Point-to-Multipoint), MIMO (Multi-Input-Multi-Output), Fog Computing, and Cloud Computing.…”

“…Consequently, XAI techniques become a requirement to increase their resilience and accountability. Deploying XAI methods in energy-efficient small cell backhauling techniques in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), high altitude platform stations, and satellites [164] will be highly challenging in terms of costs. These costs might be incurred on additional computation power, caching, and bandwidth to generate and communicate explanations.…”

“…These bands are currently being employed for an increasing number of applications, which embrace terrestrial communications, satellite-to-satellite links, automotive radars, and imaging systems. Among these applications, E-and D-band backhauling point-to-point infrastructure links are receiving particular attention in the deployment of the 5G network and future 6G [1]. For these applications, antenna systems integration aspects are particularly critical as they involve multiple technological domains.…”
