Wired Emotions: Ethical Issues of Affective Brain–Computer Interfaces

Abstract: Ethical issues concerning brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have already received a considerable amount of attention. However, one particular form of BCI has not received the attention that it deserves: Affective BCIs that allow for the detection and stimulation of affective states. This paper brings the ethical issues of affective BCIs in sharper focus. The paper briefly reviews recent applications of affective BCIs and considers ethical issues that arise from these applications. Ethical issues that affective … Show more

“…Obviously, the idea of continuous monitoring and access to someone's thoughts is dreadful, particularly when this information is collected and processed by a humanlike entity such as a robot. Especially, in the case of affective BCIs, there are unique challenges with respect to user autonomy as they entail the risk of manipulation or inducement of affective states without the user's consent (Steinert and Friedrich, 2020 ). Therefore, it is of high importance to scrutinize the ethical implications of BCI-driven robots and develop educational programs that communicate ethical guidelines to potential users before such technologies are released into the wild.…”

“…Among the types of neurotechnology already available for research and for consumer purposes are those that use brain data to control software and hardware, those that display data for user’s purposes as neurofeedback, and those that seek to modify brain activity itself. These neurostimulation or neuromodulation devices use data derived from the brain to modulate subsequent brain activity, regulating it according to some desired state (Steinert and Friedrich 2019 ). This is quite a clear challenge to autonomy.…”

“…A wide variety of applications for “affective BMIs” involve detecting or influencing users’ emotions or moods (Steinert and Friedrich 2020). One researcher’s EEG-based system is highly accurate in identifying positive and negative states (Wu et al 2017).…”
