Wire Rope Terminations, Section, And Replacement Criteria

Abstract: This paper was presented at the 12th Annual OTC in Houston, Tex., May 5·6, 1980. The materia' rs sublect to correction by the author. Permrssfon to copy Is restricted to an abstract of not more than 300 words. ABSTRACTSelection, inspection, and replacement criteria for wire rope terminations have evolved as an empirical art based generally on the experience of the user. The series of tests described in this paper provides a database upon which to build a scientific approach to wire rope termination use. Extens… Show more

“…The test sample was made up of a length of approximately 3 m of 76 mm 6 3 36 IWRC galvanized rope in a 3-3 1 8 in (76-79 mm) Crosby grooved open spelter socket, filled with Wirelock polyester resin [13]. The minimum breaking load (MBL) of the rope was 4120 kN.…”

“…Resin socket terminations are a development of spelter sockets, where the potting compound is typically a mixture of polyester resin, a silica filler and a catalyst, instead of metallic spelter. Metcalf and Matanzo [1] also found that resin socket terminations had generally slightly higher efficiencies than zinc alloy spelter sockets under tensile and fatigue loading. However, they did note that the performance of both these socket types was sensitive to poor workmanship.…”

“…There have been a number of investigations into the performance of socket-type terminations. Some are studies of performance based on the results of test programmes, including those by Metcalf and Matanzo [12], Feyrer [13], Borello [14] and Roebuck and Collins [15]. Others take a more analytical approach, e.g.…”
