“…Documenting colony losses is critical for putting losses into context and identifying potential causes of mortality, especially in different regions. To better understand the distribution of colony losses, researchers have conducted surveys at national or regional scales (Aston 2010;Brodschneider et al 2010;Charrière and Neumann 2010;Clermont et al 2014;Dahle 2010;Gajger et al 2010;Gray et al 2010;Hatjina et al 2010;Ivanova and Petrov 2010;Mutinelli et al 2010;Neumann and Carreck 2010;Nguyyen et al 2010;Pirk et al 2014;Potts et al 2010b, Soroker et al 2010Topolska et al 2010;van der Zee 2010;van der Zee et al 2012;van der Zee et al 2013;van der Zee et al 2014;Vejsnaes et al 2 0 1 0 ) , i n c l u d i n g t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s (vanEngelsdorp et al 2007(vanEngelsdorp et al , 2008(vanEngelsdorp et al , 2012Spleen et al 2013;Steinhauer et al 2014). “…As a result, the decline in honeybees has raised tremendous concern (Moritz et al 2010;vanEngelsdorp and Meixner 2010). As the result of an international effort called BPrevention of honey bee COlony LOSSes (COLOSS), a series of surveys have been conducted from around the globe toward understanding the situation of colony losses and elucidating possible causes, including Europe (Aston 2010;Charrière and Neumann 2010;Clermont et al 2014;Gajger et al 2010;Gray et al 2010;Hatjina et al 2010;Ivanova and Petrov 2010;Mutinelli et al 2010;Topolska et al 2010;Vejsnaes et al 2010;van der Zee 2010;van der Zee et al 2014), the USA Seitz et al 2015;Spleen et al 2013;Steinhauer et al 2014;vanEngelsdorp et al 2010), South Africa (Pirk et al 2014), China (Liu et al 2016;van der Zee et al 2012), and other areas (Brodschneider et al 2010;Currie et al 2010;van der Zee et al 2012). The mortalities reported were high in general, with 7-30% for Europe, 22.5-35.8% for the USA, 29.6% for Africa, and 3.3-12.6% for China.…”

“…"Short winter" means a long period in which the brood is present in the colony, thus facilitating growth of the Varroa destructor population together with associated virus infections. These pathogens are considered one of the main causes of honey bee colony losses during winter time (Kielmanowicz et al, 2015), which was also confirmed by the results of the investigation of bee samples collected in Poland from colonies which died during winter or originated from apiaries with high honey bee colony winter losses (Topolska, Gajda & Hartwig, 2008;Topolska et al, 2010;Pohorecka et al, 2011;Pohorecka et al, 2014).…”

“…During the first years of the survey multimode methods of data collection were used, but since 2013, stratified Honeybee colony winter losses in Poland 2006Poland -2012 randomized sampling has been applied for the selection of beekeepers to whom the questionnaire was sent. Some data collected during surveys were used in papers by Topolska, Gajda & Hartwig (2008) and Topolska et al (2010). The aim of this work is to analyze the temporal and spatial pattern of winter honeybee colony losses in Poland in the period from autumn 2006 to spring 2012, investigated using the multimode method of data collection based mainly on a self-selected sample.…”
