Winged ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) presence in twigs on the leaf litter of Atlantic Forest

Abstract: In the leaf litter, ants have various nesting resources available, such as live or dead trunks, twigs, leaves, fruits and seeds. On the twigs, there are adults and immature individuals, but also the queen and winged. The production of wings requires time and energy from the colony. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of winged in ant colonies in twigs on the leaf litter. Our prediction is that the richness and abundance of winged in twigs are the greatest in rainy months. We collected a… Show more

“…Entre as principais temáticas abordadas destacaram-se os estudos com a macrofauna edáfica (101 abordando a diversidade, endemismo, colonização, predação e distribuição de artrópodes na serapilheira (Freitas et al, 2014;Meloni & Varanda, 2015;Lira et al, 2016;Amaral et al, 2019). Dentre os grupos de artrópodes mais representativos, apontados nos estudos, destacaram-se as aranhas (Huber, 2016(Huber, , 2018, os besouros (Braun et al, 2018;Salomão et al, 2019), as formigas (Oliveira, M. “…Even if the ant communities that occupy twigs are not very rich and abundant, they are part of the ecological interaction processes in the leaf litter that aid in the recovery of degraded areas. Twigs are also part of the life cycle of arboreal species (Fernandes, Silva, Souza-Campana, Silva, & Morini, 2019), which includes ants that naturally control pests (Choate & Drummond, 2011), an important ecological function during the process of restoration of a degraded area.…”
